If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@molly0xfff I miss the technical barrier to entry that usually kept the internet nerdy without being hateful. The worst thing you got were flame wars about Star Wars vs Star Trek and there were no memes clogging up the discourse.

Communities were small islands instead of vast oceans of social media. There was no "reach" so trolls upset a handful of people before being kicked, instead of infecting the entire internet. People made actual friends on those forums too.

was briefly baffled by this CAPTCHA until i realized it was asking me to identify the animal that was bigger than the other animals in the picture, not the animal that, in real life, is bigger than roughly 1cm

we are rapidly approaching the point at which CAPTCHAs clever enough to keep the bots out are too confusing for the humans

This new track by ARTBAT & Armin van Buuren ("Take Off") is a banger. It's such a good mix of techno and trance.

I would love to hear this on a good-quality system at a festival!

One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@notjustbikes There are half a dozen "what happened to the Baltimore bridge?" videos on my youtube feed doing deep structural analysis. I haven't seen any outcry about them.

I think you're just being trolled at this point.

In France at the moment, not only is their a legal requirement for car parks over a certain size to have solar panels, supermarkets with smaller car parks are now doing it voluntarily as it makes them money

image/png

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@richardknott it'd still be better if the car wasn't necessary in the first place. Walkability and bike access cuts down on energy use that vastly outstrips what the panels can produce.

Honestly, I gotta say that most of the criticism of Tailwind looks a whole lot like gatekeeping from people who don't like the idea that front-end styling should be so easy.

To be fair backend types sorta deserve it for years of deriding HTML/CSS as not "real" programming.

But that's the point, both are lazy “this isn't how I learned to do it so it must be bad" sorts of criticism.

EDIT: whoa nellie I am not looking to have an argument here, you do you, I do not need convincing.

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@danderson @jacob I'd argue that Tailwind is really good for big projects because keeping everyone involved aware of a bespoke class convention is a LOT of work. Ultimately you wind up with weird one-offs and a nest of specificity hacks that nobody understands.

Instead, Tailwind encourages you DRY out your styles using templating systems most languages and frameworks already use. Put your styles close to the components that use them.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a series on estimation. But I left something out: the pre-requisite step of “breaking down” a project into constituent tasks. For me, breaking down tasks is largely intuitive — "think about the project and then write the task list" is how I might have described it. But that's a deeply unsatisfying “just draw the rest of the owl" sort of answer. So, here's a deep dive into what’s going on in my brain when I break down a project into tasks:

https://jacobian.org/2024/mar/11/breaking-down-tasks/

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@jacob true, but those same contractors installing your carpet would kick your ass if you proposed they carpet an entire extra story of your house not mentioned in the contract for the same price.

I feel like people understand contracts for physical things because they more easily visualize the scope. There's a permanence that software doesn't have and the notion of scope-creep is far more tangible.

(not agreeing with HN, just scoping is hard)

I have quite a few to go through

soviut,
@soviut@hachyderm.io avatar

@foone this photo is clearly staged. In reality, each one of these cables would be unwound and knotted with several of its neighbours such that pulling on one cable causes the entire ball to shift and tighten.

Bonus points if at least one of the cables isn't even USB and has a big wall wart on the end.

@RM_Transit I was at St George subway station in Toronto and noticed that on one of the lines they have indicators on the floor where the doors will be opening and where to stand to let people off. When my train arrived, it did indeed stop right where the indicators were.

This seems like the first step towards protected gates on that line; at least at that busy interchange station.

@geerlingguy Hey Jeff, I hastily helped my brother wire his basement for CAT6 before their contractor spray foamed it. Ironically, of all the drops, two that don't go through the outer walls aren't showing up on my cheap $10 cable tester.

I'm very tempted to get a better cable tester in the hopes that it's a distance issue. If not, at least it could tell me how far along the line the fault exists.

What was the Klein tester you were using in your video? Do you recommend that or something else?

soviut,

@molly0xfff What's unfortunate is they didn't realize soon enough that if you de-platform nazis then they don't have a lot of places where they can go complain about it. Meanwhile, if you keep them on the platform, everyone else complains about it. The latter being a much louder impact to their reputation.

    @RM_Transit Perhaps a video that addresses the claims is in order. Obviously, you don't want to feed the trolls, but if there's legitimate misinformation being spread, it's good to nip it in the bud and provide a singular place that counters/corrects it all.
