Also worth checking out an instance of PixelFed, which is another software for running fediverse servers, but optimised for photo-sharing.

Thoughts on Free Code software for .

Software requires hours of specialist labour to develop and maintain. If co-ops want Free Code software designed for the specific needs of co-ops, at a range of scales, we're going to need to come up with systems for funding both initial development and ongoing maintenance of co-op software. Fortunately for us, much of the initial development work can be done by customizing off-the-shelf Free Code, which speeds up development and reduces costs.

about the F3 format, which is a standard container for the full contents of a software project (source code, issues discussions etc). It's one part of allowing people to easily move projects between code forges, or interact with them from a different forge (ie ):

No, we don't want to make decentralization mainstream. We want to make the mainstream decentralized. We need to show people the benefits of that as we're onboarding. Not herd them into a digital stadium with a mattress each.

People have been waiting 7 months to get their electric wheelchair fixed, because the manufacturers insist on controlling and profiting from the repair process:

The right to repair needs to be entrenched in a global treaty, the same way copyright is.

I totally support this petition to establish a NZ Anti-Corruption Commission. But to sign it, I'm asked to put my name, email address and phone number into a web form that is infested with third-party JavaScript. Much of it from corporations known for DataFarming (including Goggle, FB and Titter). Ironically, this anti-corruption petition has been corrupted.

I wish my apps enabled me to search for only my posts on a given hashtag. Or search a hashtag for posts within a given date range. Or do a keyword search on my own posts. There are so many ways apps could filter the firehose to improve access to posts whose authors want them to be easily discoverable, without any major changes to the norms around not indexing posts etc.

WINZ is using MailChimp to send email. Email. A public service agency is paying a private company in the US to send email for it. Seriously? WTF.

I've been saying for ages that NZ Post ought to be pivoting into hosting email. Handling large-scale mailouts like this is a classic example of a service they could actually be making money out of, doing the digital equivalent of their traditional business.

Wow. That is extremely concerning. But imagine these people are perched on a ledge about to jump, and likely to injure or kill members of a crowd gathered below. The only viable response is trying to talk them down. Attacking them will make them more likely to harm others, not less.

Falling Down was released in 1993 but I can't think of a 90s film more relevant to our time. It illustrates the fundamental differences between actual neo-nazis, and most of the people who sometimes mouth alt-right talking points (including the Drinker himself). It shows us that most of the latter have more common cause with the left than they realise, if only we could convince them the lies about us are just another part of the Great American Lie they've been sold.
