Student Reporters Offer a Lesson on World Press Freedom Day
https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/campus-protests-student-journalism-press-freedoms
The escalating authoritarianism we’re witnessing in the crackdown on college campuses is, in part, a by-product of a media system that fails to hold powerful interests accountable for the lies they tell.

For those who didn't know (or have forgotten), there's a PeerTube channel here with videos of the talks and Q&A sessions from the #ActivityPub conference we had in late 2020:

Picking through these videos is a great way to get a sense of where some of us wanted fediverse development to go, both technically and politically.

"Today Ukrainians do not speak about 'after the war;' they speak about 'after the victory'—пiсля перемоги (pislya peremohy). 'Peremoha'— Polish theater director Krzysztof Czyżewski suggested—should become part of a new universal vocabulary. The prefix pere indicates a crossing and moha means 'I can.' Peremoha—'victory'—literally expresses a going beyond what one is able to do."

In the redesign, I’ve added a mode to show the most recent post by each member of the list. This makes it easier to see what has been happening lately with each person. It changes the representation from a stream of activities to a set of people."

Note to anyone who references the . What Karl Popper said was;

"If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant..."

With the exception of a few naive teenage libertarians, nobody is advocating unlimited tolerance. We're just arguing against abandoning tolerance to the point of dehumanizing people who hold intolerant views.

So the vast majority of handwaves at the PoT are slaughtering strawmen. The obvious response being to quote Nietzsche...

The kind of stuff I post here is mostly Social Media. Like a blog, I'm putting stuff out there for anyone (in the world) who might have a use for it.

But right now I'm sending a bunch of SMS texts to local friends about a thing I need help with, in person, tomorrow. SocialGroups stuff. The can, in theory, support this kind of use case too. But I've yet to find an existing UI that's really good for this.

This is the fundamental lie of neoliberal politics. A total inversion of the truth, which is that neoliberal parties say 'it's those poor people's fault, we'll just take the money off them and give it to you', and they do.

Hey neurotypicals, you know how it is when you're hung over? When normal lights are too bright, and normal noises are so loud it hurts, and the last thing you want to do is be in a crowded place where random people try to talk to you?

For some of us, life is like that most of the time.

When overcrowded buses replace train services, they should be free of charge. It's nowhere near the same quality of service, and charging for it is kind of rude. If it's free, it encourages train operators to do everything they can to avoid replacement bus situations.

They could make it half price, at the very least.

One thing that keeps getting ignored in the debates about getting farming businesses to pay for their - like all other businesses have to - is that farmers aren't obliged to emit fucktons of carbon.

There are farmers whose operations emit far less than the average. We're not trying to "punish" farmers, we're trying to help fund the cost of helping them adopt lower-carbon methods, and build an incentive to do so into their finances, instead of just obliging them by law.

Just when I think I've plumbed the depths of David Seymour's cluelessness, he responds to the NewsHub announcement by saying he'll save them by making TVNZ pay a dividend to Treasury again. This is the publicly-owned TV broadcaster that lost NZ$17 million in the first half of last year. Even Winston, who railed against the "mainstream" media through the election campaign, thinks that's dopey.
