Overheard 2 businessmen discussing corporate office changes so that employees "won't feel like just a cog in a machine."

They came up with these 'great' strategies:

  • Rearrange the cubicles
  • Art on the walls
  • Seat managers closer to employees
  • More team fun events

Notably not discussed:

  • More pay
  • Profit sharing
  • More ownership of decisions & input
  • Recognition of employee successes
  • More PTO and/or work-life flexibility
  • WFH options

Good luck guys! ๐Ÿ˜†

Don't let hollow men tell us that the only growth or progress possible or valuable for our species is in the material realm. The profit-making realms.

How sad that they don't see the value in making progress in art, health, knowledge, equality, peace, opportunities, exploration, social connections, tolerance, happiness and more.

These are stunted individuals whose limited vision will drive us all to an empty future leaving our humanity behind.

The announcement makes sense when you realize that this positions Microsoft even further to monetize the act of itself.

When you handicap and make them so dependent on LLMs to write code, that (eventually) they no longer know how to do so without it, then suddenly the days of working in a free editor are over.

๐Ÿ”ฅHot take:
It's not a "free trial" if I have to pick a plan & give my credit card & get billed the second the trial ends.

This is delayed billing. I'm paying with the effort it will take to remember to reassess at the end of the trial & manually cancel if I didn't like it. I'm paying by giving you my credit card info. I'm paying with reminder burden.

This is a dark pattern.

Quick note that I'm available for part-time and/or contract work for teams needing to augment a project but don't need a full time staff member.

I excel at maintaining & modernizing legacy PHP apps, Symfony, technical documentation writing & team leadership.

I have some niche experience in multilingual projects (EN/FR) and Canadian insurance rating. I could pick back up quickly.

Remote only (EST timezone). ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป

I just got my first real taste of the power of #Mastodon. I wanted to reply to a post on the new #StarTrek #Lemmy instance & was lamenting the need for another social account. Then realized I can copy the url of the post into the search box here & view it like a Mastodon post. I can reply & my reply shows up on the original Lemmy thread.

Wow! ๐Ÿคฉ

All we need now is a button that opens it in your currently logged in fediverse instance. ๐Ÿค”

Maybe a browser plugin?

Received the phpc.social newsletter today, and I just want to take a moment to sincerely thank @ramsey & @ian for their work setting up, organizing fundraising for, and administering this little corner of the fediverse. ๐Ÿ‘

I've had a great experience here & it has become my primary social media.

Thanks guys!

If I could just type a damn password I'd be in by now. Instead of refreshing my inbox & checking my spam over & over. ๐Ÿ˜ก

Just watched a local production of a play (in French) titled "J'ai pรชtรฉ du thรฉรขtre."

GPT when pronounced in sounds like "J'ai pรชtรฉ" which means "I farted".

So the the title of their play is "I farted theatre". (Or "GPT Theatre".)

About a writer who uses to write scenes for their play & the hilarious nonsense it creates.

The teens have already nailed down the meta joke about this whole situation & it slapped. ๐Ÿคฃ

People keep acting surprised that corporations put profit above all other values. That they run on greed.

How many times is everyone's jaw going to hit the floor when corporations do what they are supposed to do?

We've collectively decided that capitalism is the 'best' way to structure society then we cry when it burns us over and over and over.

What's your thoughts on vs ? I'm looking for a PHP CMS that isn't WordPress based on a potential client's request. Prefer based so that's why these 2.

Mostly a brochure site with some normal CMS-y features (gallery, contact form, etc).

Bonus for ease of ongoing maintenance.

This year I'm taking a different approach to New Year's Resolutions. Instead of starting something new in January, I'm going to dedicate the last 2 months of this year to finishing as many miscellaneous tasks & projects as possible to give myself a clean-slate and empty todo list in January.

This means procrastinated household chores, personal goals like read some extra books, and work tasks that have been hanging around.

Less starting - more finishing! โœ…

Teachers are jumping through hoops to identify / generated content in students' work.

My husband is a high-school English teacher.

His students must write essays in Google Docs & he uses a playback browser extension to watch the students' edits in fast-forward to identify chunks of pasted-in content. He also has half a dozen tools he analyses the work with that gives a score of how likely it is to be AI generated. And he compares the style & quality to their other work.

Developer folks....

If you want to describe that a project has been fixed for all the errors found by a static analysis tool up to a certain level, how would you say it?

Ex:
"This project is ______ for level 6."

  • fixed
  • valid
  • passing
  • correct
  • ?

It drives me nuts when people reply to questions with some variant of "Googling things is free you know."

Isn't it always better to get an answer from someone who knows? Isn't it nicer to have conversations with people?

I don't think we should all just default to interacting with eachother the bare minimum.

Sometimes people are asking not because they've never heard of a search engine, but because they enjoy learning from people.

I'm convinced people keep so many tabs open because bookmarking sucks.

It always just sticks it in your last used folder (or the root folder) so you have to edit it right away to put it in the right place.

You have to edit out all the crap that sites put into the title tag to get a sane bookmark name.

Opening bookmarks is rarely quick unless you've really optimized the organization.

You get a lot of bookmark rot of things you've forgotten why you saved, or page doesn't exist. ๐Ÿ‘Ž

really didn't do anyone any favours by making EVERYTHING a post and stuffing everything into the Posts table.

I don't know how they talked themselves into the idea that Media uploads are 'posts' but this is really bad architecture.
