It’s fucking nuts that service providers can just remove your purchases like this without refunds.

I'm fairly confident that in the EU, and still AFAIK in the UK, this wouldn't be legal. In the UK this is the Unfair Contract Terms Act. The EU legislation is linked below. The schedule of unfair term includes

(d) permitting the supplier to retain sums paid where the latter decides not to perform the contract, without providing for compensation of an equivalent amount from the supplier where the latter is the party cancelling the contract;

MAGA: We need to run the country based on the Bible

Leviticus 19:34: The foreigner who resides with you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him as yourself

MAGA: Not that part

Deut 27:19: "Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner."

MAGA: Or that part

Even then they don't do it. When I was in the USA legally on an H1-B I wasn't allowed to vote, claim social security or change jobs, contrary to Leviticus 24:22

You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the Lord your God.”

Right wing media is again demonizing migrants and refugees for "having cell phones." Look ya'll—never take seriously those who ridicule migrants & refugees for having a smartphone or laptop.

“If they’re refugees how did they get an iPhone???”

Because they’re trying to escape violence, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is luxury, survive a month without it.

@QasimRashid
This is a t-shirt I have, based on Maslow's Hierarch of Needs. For most of us this is a joke, but for a refugee it is the plain everyday truth, because your cellphone and bandwidth are the only way to get literally everything else above. With a cellphone you can find out where to go and what to do. Without it your only option is to wander around a city center asking random people for help.

For Month, I'd like to mention . The show ran from 1993 to 1998, and made a point of not making a point of gay relationships. Susan Ivanova (serving military officer) had a lesbian affair with Talia Winters, and no other character even blinked.

Later on two straight men on a secret mission found themselves using "newlyweds" as a cover story, because two men on their honeymoon would fit right in.

The message was clear: in the future being gay is 100% unremarkable. In the 90s!

Just because you had your head in the sand for the entire presidency doesn’t mean there was “peace everywhere”

Kids were getting gassed in Syria.

There were 2,243 drone strikes in the first two years of Trump.

There was a failed coup in Venezuela.

Trump’s policy of deterrence by tweet allowed North Korea to fully develop ICBMs.

Via Kyle Griffin:

AG rejects the claim that Biden tried to assassinate him during the Mar-a-Lago raid:

"That allegation is false and it is extremely dangerous. The document that is being referred to in the allegation is a Justice Department standard policy limiting the use of force. As the FBI advises, it is part of a standard operations plan for searches and in fact it was even used in the consensual search of President Biden's home."

So what if Biden did try to assassinate Trump. Biden is president, so he has total immunity, doesn't he? [end sarcasm].

So, I've been working on hatching a theoretical structure to address the quandary of MAGA for a long time. I think it is almost impossible to combat it unless one can identify grasp the causal factors of the eruption of a mass psychosis. This is going to be a really long thread and I'm developing it slowly. Please feel free to mute me if this irritates you - I'm thinking aloud here. And most of my ideas aren't original, I'm just sometimes gathering them together in novel ways.

@Remittancegirl
Have you read Umberto Eco on fascism? https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/umberto-eco-ur-fascism His point is that fascism isn't an ideology, its more like a collection of attitudes flying in close formation and reinforcing each other. So fascism doesn't have a fixed view of e.g. the relationship between the state and the production of goods. It also rejects reasoning, evidence and logic as ways to decide such things.

Right-wing Tory MP discovers that the NHS can't afford his care.

> ... his hands were originally provided by the NHS, but he has since gone outside the NHS for new hands, likening the original prosthetic hands he was given to "something out of medieval times".

Perhaps if the NHS were properly funded he wouldn't have had to do that. And others, who can't afford spiffy new hands, might be able to get them too.

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/A-general-model-of-a-sociotechnical-safety-control-structure-in-STAMP-Leveson-2012_fig1_274399861

Its from work by Nancy Leveson, who has pioneered STAMP, a new model for understanding safety failures.

The concept (to oversimplify) is about identifying potential loss of control in feedback loops, whether that is loss of control of an aircraft by a pilot, or of an industry by the government. Each feedback loop control system is embedded in others that are intended to monitor and correct when the lower level goes wrong.

UK trainee anaesthetists have their job hunt totally screwed up by admins

"The interview scores are stored in an Excel spreadsheet. Each of the seven [UK] recruitment regions creates a separate spreadsheet, but these have no standardised template, naming convention or structure. After being manually amended, all of the various scores are entered into a Master spreadsheet. This is carried out row-by-row and takes several days, likely to be subject to interruptions"

The on how to treat :

Leviticus 19:33 When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. 34 You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

Exodus 23:9 You shall not oppress a . You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Has Mike Johnson read those bits?

The runway crash at offers a stark reminder that while system of air traffic control in the air have been refined & developed to offer high levels of safety, the same is less true of planes traversing airports on the ground.

While after the notorious two 747 crash at Tenerife (claiming 583 deaths) led to some reform, with ever busier & strained airports, such reforms now look to have been inadequate, as on-ground crashes are increasing.

You're safer in the air than on the ground

tokensane,
@tokensane@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 /2 Once you reach the point where an aircraft has to hold for another plane landing you have the chance of an error putting two aircraft on the runway at the same time. Perversely having a queue for takeoff probably reduces the chance of error because it normalises holding.

This is going to be my first long-form post. I don't know if this will go anywhere, but I want to get this off my chest.

The UK has a problem with sewage in its seas and rivers. The Standard Model of this on the Left is that greedy privatised water companies have focused on paying shareholders rather than investing in infrastructure. Hence we are in a literal mess.

This narrative is seriously incomplete, verging on wrong.
