Is it love or mild intrigue? I’ll take it, either way, no hisses or growls. They’ve only lived together for 4.5 years, he was a kitten and she was seven years old. #catsofmastodon #dogsofmastodon #RaederlesNuggetTheCat #RaederlesWicketTheDog

The remote control for the TV where we are staying tonight worked long enough to turn the TV on, and no longer

There are no channel changing or volume control buttons on this JVC. Not even a power button!

What to do?

Found "TV remote" app on my phone, programmed it for this JVC and all is well again.

Will buy a couple of AAA batteries tomorrow.

I never want to see this part of the world ever again. I'll revisit Arran for a relaxing sightseeing trip but not this malarkey.

woollypigs,
@woollypigs@sudomakecake.ddns.net avatar

@JackTheCat utterly horrible Arran is, we nearly didn't get on to and off the island when we visited, because of storms causing the ferry's to cancel.

woollypigs,
@woollypigs@sudomakecake.ddns.net avatar

@JackTheCat yes we loved our trip as most of the time between the two storms the weather was brilliant. And I won a pub quiz in Lamlash, grand price was a pint ;)

My guess would be that these "no go areas" are the product of racists who don't want to go to places which confound their nasty, dog-whistle views.

"Tory MP Paul Scully claims there are ‘no-go’ areas in Birmingham and London."

I was asked what the first movie that ever scared me was.

It's impossible for me to say. Go far enough back and memories of movies blur into a single thing.

I can say it was black and white and had Peter Cushing in it.

woollypigs,
@woollypigs@sudomakecake.ddns.net avatar

@selzero The Moomins, the TV series from back in the day, it for some reason spooked me more than any horror, splatter or gore movie or book ever did or could.

Mojn Hivemind I'm running Debian 12/bookworm, on AMD, with everything all updated. But some time ago the volume dropped. I have always set the main volume 100% and chrome at 40-50% for a perfect level. But now even if I use the pulseaudio trick of turning it to 11 (150%) and maxing out all other volume settings. The level is still lower than before. I've reinstalled. purged, tried Pipewire, looking in alsamixier. Let Me Google That has hit a wall. Anyone got an idea?

There is still a widely accepted narrative in the U.K. media that the fact that the people of the U.K. are so in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza is down to the U.K.s' large Muslim population.

I hate to let basic arithmetic get in the way of a cool story, but -

6.7 % of the U.K. population is Muslim.

76% of the U.K. population want a ceasefire.

A man sees a sign outside a house - 'Talking Dog For Sale.' He rings the bell, the owner appears and tells him the dog can be viewed in the back garden.

The man sees a very nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there.

"Do you really talk?" he asks the dog.

"Yes," the Labrador replies.

After recovering from the shock of hearing the dog talk, the man asks, "So, tell me your story."

The Labrador looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I was sold to the SAS. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one imagined that a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years".

"But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at Heathrow Airport to do some undercover security work, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded several medals".

"Then I got married, had a few puppies, and now I've just retired."

The man is amazed. He goes back into the house and asks the owner how much he wants for the dog.

"Ten quid," the owner says.

"£10! But your dog is absolutely amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?"

"Because he's a lying bastard, he's never been out of the garden."

I've been essentially off Twitter for almost a year now, and Mastodon has become an increasingly rich, diverse replacement. Many of the gaps that were here a year ago are filling in.

I still miss the extensive breaking news coverage and official government and org accounts I remember from Twitter.

When I've mentioned this in the past, zealots here have suggested I shouldn't want those things and that they'd somehow ruin this "community".

I disagree. We can have those things without Nazis.

woollypigs,
@woollypigs@sudomakecake.ddns.net avatar

@mattblaze me too miss the breaking news. But right now trying to fill that void with a RSS reader and loads of feeds. Early days but I'm getting that news fix without supporting Space Karen.

just watched a video about the lack of bicycles in hollywood productions. e.g. there are post apocalypse shows where there's no fuel or they can't use engines for other reasons, and the characters are shown walking or riding a horse. they never try bikes even though it's the most popular mode of transportation on the planet. Daryl from TWD on a bicycle? uncool. if a protagonist is doing it, it's a comedy. riding a bicycle is seen as a ridiculous thing to do unless you're a child. I am stunned.

woollypigs,
@woollypigs@sudomakecake.ddns.net avatar

@reginasbread or still finding diesel 20 years later that still works in a car that has been standing around for 20 years, without any work, bar maybe charging a lead acid battery without any service that also has been standing around for 20 years, oh and lo and behold, all still got air in the tires still after <repeat after me> 20 fecking years ...

    I'm an old school map user, remember paper maps? That's where I learned to read and my love looking at maps.

    I'm not a Luddite, I love tech and being able to look at maps on my laptop or mobile. Is absolutely brilliant. Switch from satellite, to street view to map, thanks Google. Being able to add a new path, stile or road all by myself, thanks OpenStreetMap.

    But for the love of Dog, please, please let me have North (always, Dog damnit) up. No matter how I tap, pinch to zoom, drag around.

    Yes, I can go into settings and set it to be North up. But as soon as my fingers hit the screen, the map starts to spin about, when I try to zoom, drag, pinch, whatever it's called when I use a digital map.

    I would be happy to have a setting that totally locks north up, that I have to untick to be able to get spin or that 3D view. Because I'll never use/need it. A true set and forget ;)

    My dog, that we’ve had for just over two years, has gone for a sleepover at a friend’s house (with my son).

    The house feels different. I don’t like it. Suspect I am missing him more than him me.
