Very concerning: An Israeli Company Is Hawking Its Self-Launching Drone System to US-Police Departments. A Louisiana sheriff’s department has been testing the drone system, which is already used by Israeli police & many settlements. There’s a documented history of US-Israel security tech exchanges, which civil rights & racial justice advocates have long criticized for contributing to the militarization of the police: https://theintercept.com/2024/05/17/israel-orione-drone-us-police-louisiana/

Good morning to readers, Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

have leveled the playing field between a Goliath and a David-like .

But drone development is evolving so quickly that Ukrainian engineers must innovate — or people die.

There’s no place in the world where innovation is happening faster than in Ukraine.

With fewer funds and fewer soldiers, Ukraine has needed to out-think and out-innovate the Russian military.

timkmak,
@timkmak@journa.host avatar

And nowhere is that more evident than in drone technology, which has grown by leaps and bounds since the full-scale invasion just over two years ago.

“It would be fair to say that Ukraine has done a great amount of work in the drone area by using the cheapest parts for drones to develop the most effective weapons,” said Alexander Chernyavskiy, the head of the Ukrainian charity fund Free in Spirit.

“Drones have totally changed this war,” he said. “Right now drones have the same role, the same significance as [the] artillery shell -- [which traditionally has been known as] the 'King of Battle.'”

The drone war has already gone through multiple phases.

Bayraktars, the Turkish-made drones, were purchased by Ukrainians at $5 million apiece at the beginning of the war, and were used to great effect in the defense of Kyiv.

Threats from drones must cause headaches for security people at all large public events nowadays , technology developed on the battlefields of Ukraine can easily be applied by terrorists in an urban context.

Chilling article from Zeteo on Israel’s use of armed quadcopters in Gaza and the future development of such warfare.

"The point here is not that armed quadcopters like those the Israeli military reportedly uses in Gaza are unprecedented. It's that they are very, very precedented, to the degree that they have the aura of inevitability"

Ukraine military says it hit Russian $5 million radar system

The Podlet-K1 is modern mobile radar system detecting air targets at low & extremely low altitudes

The Podlet radar station is a relatively new Russian development — they began distributing it to the aggressor state’s army in 2015

“This system was used by the enemy to detect and transmit target coordinates to Russian S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.”

Why can't we shoot down exactly the same Shahed drones over , just like that - without a state of war?!

chris,

5 years ago “Door Dashing" in my small town was not possible, but conceivable.

Today Delivery-By-Drone is conceivable but not possible.

In 5 years the latter may be the norm, and the former, a short term blip in consumerism.

Frankly, I see delivery by drone as a good use of technology to eliminate wasteful car-based, low-wage jobs like food delivery.

@mlansbury@despora.de:> ## Turkish drone manufacturer has begun construction of factory near Kyiv

told Reuters at the sidelines of the World Defense Show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that the factory is already being built and will need one year to complete construction.

The plant aims to employ around 500 people, he said.

The factory's planned output is around 120 units per year, but it is unclear exactly which drone model will be produced.

When asked if security concerns had caused any hesitation, Bayraktar said the plans were were "fully moving ahead" and that "nothing" would stop them.
