“Fili meant ‘seer’, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that part of their role revolved around the foretelling of the future. In fact, originally the Fili may have served many functions, such as sorcerer, judge, keeper of law, chieftain’s adviser as well as poet and storyteller.
At some point, these responsibilities seem to have been divided, with the Brehons specialising in the legal aspects, the Druids taking on the religion and ritual, and the Fili concentrating on history and poetry.“

Prime example is the guy, Ronald Plasterk, who almost became Prime Minister of the Netherlands.. patented under his name the cancer medicine he didn't invent, then earned 32 million Euro when selling his company. Amsterdam Medical Center and researcher who did the work, got nothing.

Now he resigned his candidacy with a "I did nothing wrong, acted with integrity". And under hypercapitalism what he did is indeed normal, the norm. 😡

: Crannogs were in use in #Ireland from the middle Bronze Age into the seventeenth century. A crannog is an artificial island constructed from brush, timber, clay, peat and stone, often supported by timber piles. Large stones were added to their edges, probably to protect them from the force of the water. The surface would have been topped with a fine layer of earth and sand. The old Irish word is crannóc, from crann, meaning ‘tree’ and óg, meaning ‘young’. It is not known if this term refers to the island itself, or the structures built upon it.

So tonight might have ended in karaoke 🙊

The amazing singer I’m with is Holly and any screw ups are courtesy of me – have loved the song forever, but my first time singing it :)

(Video by Sandy, the lovely bartender who introduced us; apologies for the quality.)

aral,

@awoodsnet My background, not unsurprisingly, is in musical theatre :)

But I might have had a band once when I was very young where we did Deep Purple, The Doors, etc.

: In ancient „the role of a physician was a hereditary one. He passed down his skills and knowledge to his offspring, and often to apprentices living with the family. In later years, this wealth of information was written down in manuscripts and books. The most famous of these is the Book of the O’Lees.“

Interesting: I just tried following someone on mastodon.ie with an unlocked account and it got turned into a follow request.

Has mastodon.ie silenced me?

If so, I’d like to know why.

CC @mastodonie

PS. This won’t affect you if you’re already following me. It will mean my posts would get hidden from the public timeline and wouldn’t show up in trending posts, etc., on your instance. Hence “silenced.”

jonoabroad,
@jonoabroad@mastodon.nz avatar

@aral this was/is one of the things about social media that we don't have a good or really any solution to yet.

I had to stop myself on twitter from wanting to know why people had blocked me, I think I'm mostly harmless, if a bit sweary.

It would be nice if one could see why a block occurs or has occurred.

But then 🤷‍♂️

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@jonoabroad A block is one thing (and, at an instance level, should be communicated with a reason). Shadow-banning/silencing without reason at the instance level is another (and should also be communicated). Twitter had better transparency in communicating some of these things (and allowing for appeals) than some fediverse instances.
