It was a good day, a quiet day, and it passed pleasantly out on the water as one literally watched the world go by.

Or more accurately, the world stayed in one place as you sailed by it.

And now, as evening approaches, it's time to think about coming back to shore, but then again, there's really no hurry about that. There's no hurry about a lot of things . . .

@Delphi I loved the Optimist I learned to sail in many years ago. The sight of 30+ 7-10 year olds on the water was always amusing (even to me at the time).

@Wen @Delphi Years ago, in Simonstown, I saw 2 kids in an Oppie sail around a little bay near the yacht club. There was a navy rowing skiff moored in the bay. The skipper rounded up into the wind smartly astern of the skiff, nearing it with precision and allowing his mate to climb aboard. You could have put an egg between the Oppie and the skiff, it was so skilful. He repeated the manoeuvre to allow his mate to get back aboard, dropped off onto the wind and away.
It was beautiful seamanship.

There comes a point when we can eat no more because our bodies simply must have time to digest what we have taken in.

So it is with knowledge, or what passes for knowledge, or facts, or "news," -- there comes a point when we must stop ingesting and take time to review and ponder over, analyze and question, think upon and contemplate what we have taken in.

Exciting day on the water, but any day you're on the radio with Coast Guard is exciting. Happily, it was more exciting for somebody else and we were merely standing by to render assistance. Didn't finish the race, but we didn't break anything, didn't lose anyone.

Back down the lake, our club's education director was missing for half an hour, but had been picked up by a jet ski almost immediately. She was safe, the person we assisted was safe, and we got in a pre cold front sail.

the SailGP event in my hometown's backyard didn't accidentally stumble into a marine mammal sanctuary. it picked one as its event venue. so the crying among those profiting from the event (including politicians making ideological profit) about a stop race order after a Hector's dolphin sighting was pure theatrics. those catamarans have a top speed > 100kph! 🤬 ⛵️🐬 https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch/audio/2018932066/cranky-claims-drown-out-facts-in-sailgp-dolphin-drama

They all had something to do, and each valued the contributions of the others.

And because they were friends, they listened as much as they spoke, and even if they disagreed on issues, it didn't stop them from working together toward the common goal of moving that boat forward and enjoying the day.

This large has run aground - as well as calling PAN PAN on the radio to alert the Coastguard / Harbourmaster and other vessels, as a visual signal 3 balls are displayed on the front mast (this is to the left of the picture). If the vessel cannot be steered, 2 balls are displayed.

This is why in when something has gone badly wrong, we often say there has been a "total balls up" 😁

When I was a kid, our calendars had holidays marked out in red: a red letter day was a special one, worthy of standing out from the rest of the week.

Some days spontaneously turn into red letter days, regardless of what the calendar says. These are days of joy and freedom, enjoyed with family and friends.

Had a great session today on the river. There was a slight drizzle and the wind was very irregular, but we had a great day. I remembered to start the track recording on my phone. Max speed of 15km/h, 8 knots.

A screenshot of an app showing a total duration of 1 hour and 35 minutes, travelling a total distance of 8.2km. There is a map showing the track starting on the side of the river and zig-zagging downriver under a bridge and back.

Social media gives the mistaken impression that we "know" a lot of people, but to truly know someone -- their depth, richness, personality, and character -- requires spending actual time with them in a time and space of reality.

When we do, we may find that we like some people more than we thought we would.
