My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

Although I have yet to see any of his films, I can't wait to dive into the cinematography of Wong Kar-wai

I've seen many a video essay on his work, and I want to learn from him pretty badly

A chat on here yesterday reminded me of the 1980's film The Apple which is... well... something.

I made a few gifs from it a few years back & thought I'd lost them, but my digital hoarding habit is victorious.

Going to do a wee thread of them, as they make me giggle so much they will surely entertain someone else as well.

I don't usually just grab clips from other media, but it's quite an obscure film & I'd not seen any others circling about so...

Close up of a mans face. He is bearded, with eye make-up and a symbol on his forehead. He wears a slightly shiny grey suit and bow tie, with white shirt. He looks coquettishly at the camera.

What’s the scariest you’ve ever seen?

For me, it’s “Don’t Look Up” bc while the is supposed to be satire, it’s terrifyingly plausible from my perspective as a former staffer who now studies science policy.

Morning All. Happy Friday!

Here is an image of a local Bluebell Wood. Although Bluebells are naturalised in other parts of the world, they are actually native to Western Europe, and over half of the world's population are found in the UK.

Bluebells are a common indicator species for ancient woodlands, so bluebell woods can date back at least 1600 years.

Ok, Fediverse. This is a tough one.

I saw a short film years ago, maybe in the early 2000s. I was explaining it to someone earlier. I have tried off and on to find it, but I have been unable, so I'm putting it to film buffs who may be familiar with it. It's called "The Boundary" with Alexander Siddig (from DS9). The director is Julius Onah.

A gold star goes to anyone who can locate this short film!⭐

Boosts appreciated!

I would like to propose some new World Rules:

  1. No podcast will be longer than 45 minutes. 2. No film will be longer than 2.5 hours. EVER. 3. No book should be longer than 500 pages unless it really is good enough to win major awards.

Well, that was a blast from the past!

Just watched the old 80s SciFi movie "Battle Beyond the Stars". I came across it while browsing recommendations on streaming.

There is a SciFi movie I watched on TV as a kid, early 80s, that I've been looking for, and I think this is the one. The listed Norwegian title on IMDB seems to match what I remember too.

It's actually quite enjoyable too. Pretty average overall, but a nice watch for a lazy Saturday. 😊
