Wie sich Software ressourcenschonend und energieeffizient betreiben als auch entwickeln lässt und was das mit freier #OpenSource Software zu tun hat, darauf geht @tds in seinem #37C3 Vortrag "Software Licensing For A Circular Economy" ein. This is one of Heather Cox Richardson's best:

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/december-29-2023

She has written about these ideas at length in two of her books, To Make Men Free and How the South Won the Civil War.

I discovered her books while I was writing the Making of America series. When I got to volume 5, FDR, I realized I needed a deeper understanding of how the parties evolved. That was when I found To Make Men Free (a history of the Republican Party.)

"240 million PCs could end up in landfills when Windows 10 support ends"

Sure.

Or they could be repurposed with or Chrome OS Flex, or , and we can stop being so freaking dramatic.

If you just browse, watch Netflix, shop, net banking, etc, Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu could save you money. It is an environment-friendly option.

windows just deprecated windows mixed reality. thousands of headsets are going to become bricked. open source drivers (monado) do not fully support WMR. they are still selling WMR headsets like the Reverb G2. there is no refund policy. the only way to use WMR is to never upgrade your windows install. fuck microsoft.

kkarhan,

@moth @j0 Also this is the reason why one should NEVER EVER allow or use and/or / standards at all…
To me, shit like this should be as the and purposeful creation of it is amd as well as should be forced to for all platforms (not just but espechally ) or be forced to not only refund everyone but pay the cost of buying a on top…

I feel like I had a nerdy "coming of age" moment yesterday - I installed on an old laptop.

My parents gave it to me to recycle (because Chrome was no longer updating, and they were worried about security), and asked for advice on what to get as a replacement (mainly just to watch TV in bed), and I'm just gonna give it back to them, now that it's running smoothly again with an up-to-date OS! 😎🤓

This is definitely something I'm keen to do more of, to save folks money, and reduce .

Last week, after putting up with years of poor performance by my main work computer, I decided to do something about it.

But instead of buying a new one, I decided to tackle the pretty tough job of digging into the very, very difficult-to-repair and upgrade iMac.

I learnt a lot about what is involved and what I think Apple – the richest company on the planet – needs to fix about its computers.

That, plus the amount of CO2 I'm saving by not turning a device simply into #ewaste.

Bitcoin is dirty, dirty, dirty.

“The worldwide BTC mining network consumed 173.42 TWh of electricity during the 2020–2021 period, bigger than the electricity consumption of most nations. The mining process emitted over 85.89 Mt of CO2eq in the same timeframe, equivalent to the emission caused by burning [42 million tons] of coal or running 190 natural gas‐fired power plants.”

There are many people who seem to dislike the idea of standardization.

I'm not one of them.

World-wide, there are 15 power outlets types and 9 DVD regions, and 4 Blu-ray regions.

That is only a small sample of what happens when we don't have universal standardization. There are so many areas in everyday life that vastly changes, depending on where you are or where you order from.

@Linux_Is_Best well, you do need that in as DVB-T has been shut down for no good reason and created tons of 100% avoidable ...

40% of the machines that run Windows 10 today won’t be able to run Windows 11. That could potentially "cause the single biggest jump in junked computers ever."

As of June 2023 Windows 10 was still preferred by 71.9% of the “market share”, while Windows 11 had 22.95%. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/petition-microsoft-reconsider-cutting-support-160959423.html

• Recycle and redeploy these PCs with Linux.
