She has written about these ideas at length in two of her books, To Make Men Free and How the South Won the Civil War.
I discovered her books while I was writing the Making of America series. When I got to volume 5, FDR, I realized I needed a deeper understanding of how the parties evolved. That was when I found To Make Men Free (a history of the Republican Party.)
"240 million PCs could end up in landfills when Windows 10 support ends"
Sure.
Or they could be repurposed with #Linux or Chrome OS Flex, or #FreeBSD, and we can stop being so freaking dramatic.
If you just browse, watch Netflix, shop, net banking, etc, Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu could save you money. It is an environment-friendly option.
240 million functioning PCs/laptops will be chucked into landfills.
Because #Microsoft has managed to convince consumers that computers cannot exist without #Windows.
windows just deprecated windows mixed reality. thousands of headsets are going to become bricked. open source drivers (monado) do not fully support WMR. they are still selling WMR headsets like the Reverb G2. there is no refund policy. the only way to use WMR is to never upgrade your windows install. fuck microsoft.
I feel like I had a nerdy "coming of age" moment yesterday - I installed #linux on an old laptop.
My parents gave it to me to recycle (because Chrome was no longer updating, and they were worried about security), and asked for advice on what to get as a replacement (mainly just to watch TV in bed), and I'm just gonna give it back to them, now that it's running smoothly again with an up-to-date OS! 😎🤓
This is definitely something I'm keen to do more of, to save folks money, and reduce #eWaste.
@becha#Bitcoin :bitcoin: is a prime producer for 100% avoidable #eWaste and it's even worse than #Apple's #AntiRepairDesign cuz those have 0 salvageable components that could be taken to #repair nor could they be #reused differently and all they do when #UseLonger is being done is turn electricity into hot air...
Hey we're a small group who put together a FREE programme of presentations around low-tech, permacomputing, collective tech practices, extraction, and ewaste.
FOMO alert: nope it's not streamed and probably won't be recorded, but surely you know a lot of cool people around you doing connected things, :unwanted_thinking: what about you try to organise something local as well? See https://permacomputing.net/getting_started/
“The worldwide BTC mining network consumed 173.42 TWh of electricity during the 2020–2021 period, bigger than the electricity consumption of most nations. The mining process emitted over 85.89 Mt of CO2eq in the same timeframe, equivalent to the emission caused by burning [42 million tons] of coal or running 190 natural gas‐fired power plants.”
@ScottAkenhead And let's not get over the #energy wasted to build #Bitcoin :bitcoin: #ASIC|s, because fabricating custom #silicon that cannot be repurposed for anything at all alongside the #PCBs and auxiliary components takes a shitload of expensive and not envoirementally-friendly materials and an absurd amount of energy.
Compared to i.e. #Monero :monero: where COTS hardware is used that can be used for computing and not end up as #eWaste once it's unprofitable to #mine with...
There are many people who seem to dislike the idea of standardization.
I'm not one of them.
World-wide, there are 15 power outlets types and 9 DVD regions, and 4 Blu-ray regions.
That is only a small sample of what happens when we don't have universal standardization. There are so many areas in everyday life that vastly changes, depending on where you are or where you order from.
40% of the machines that run Windows 10 today won’t be able to run Windows 11. That could potentially "cause the single biggest jump in junked computers ever."
At the same time Apple argued against a regulatory requirement for USB-C phones, saying it would produce piles of e-waste from obsolete products, the company was shipping products like this shattering, fraying Lighting cable for us to use for a few months before shuffling it off to the landfill. #Apple#EWaste#Lightning#Cable#USB
"Over 3 billion kilograms of valuable electronics inside children’s toys are thrown away each year, and very few people are aware of this hidden e-waste"
