After 8 months working on Mastodon, in particular on infrastructure for mastodon.social and mastodon.online, I have been able to articulate my vision for the future of Trust & Safery for Mastodon : https://renchap.com/blog/post/evolving_mastodon_trust_and_safety/

We need better tools to go along the growth of the Fediverse, and they need to enable multiple instances to work together on those topics and keep our loved network safe for everyone!

OC A quick guide to creating and moderating magazines

Hello kbin! Since there’s a lot of new users migrating to this platform, I decided to make a short guide to creating and moderating a magazine. This will be a quick and short guide since there will be a lot of new features coming soon. I might make a new guide when a few major tools come, but in the meantime, I will...

Okay, so, I've just done a review of the features in both and .

I've written up a fuller report on the IFTAS matrix, but the tl;dr is: if you care about user safety, do not deploy either of these.

They do not feature comprehensive or well built moderation tools, and you will not be able to effectively moderate instances running this software.

You are better off waiting to deploy these once they mature more.

Edit: removed user mentions to stop spamming them.

Hmmm, every server I'm getting spam from has a new user in their public directory named yqqwe, and each one of these users is following mastodon_admin_yggwe on a single-user instance mastodon.tinynews.org. One can look at the 924 followers of this admin and they all are named yqqwe and they are all on servers I've been getting from.

Clarification

You do not have to worry about your mastodon.social (m.s) account being defederated.

There is a well meaning, but misleading post currently promoted that suggests you should move your m.s account because:

  1. "Instance admins are considering defederating them"
  2. "Their admin is making spam accounts easier to create."

Very few, if any, instances are considering blocking m.s, and the recent spam attacks are worthy of sober discussion, not hyperbole. [more]

Some words about Mastodon moderation:

  1. It’s hard. No decision is easy and there’s lots of gray area even with explicit rules.
  2. We’ll sometimes debate for a long time on a single post. We do our best to make the right call.
  3. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.
  4. We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see.

Open Call for Panel

Some of you know I have been working on non-profit funding to create an organisation ("IFTAS") to support moderators and admins. This is a non-profit entity that employs moderators and advisors to improve the tools and policies we have access to, and to present a strong voice to platform developers describing the tools and features needed to conduct the work.

“Some of your posts have been reported by a user and I resolved it so far.

In the future. Please make sure not to insult others and be rude.”

Here’s my suggestion to the moderators of mstdn.social: Stop tone policing people on other instances. I’m not on your instance and I’ll speak my mind as I like on my own one. If anyone has a problem with that, they can block me. It’s not your job to tone police the fediverse even if you are a mega instance.

Just wanted to point out, with the ongoing #spam attack on #fediverse / #misskey / #mastodon, this kind of happens on every social network. The only reason you are hearing about it is because #moderation #staff is normal users who use the normal channels to talk about it, and we actually take it way more seriously than the corporate social networks do.

Like, this represents most of the traffic on #Twitter, and they don't seem to care, so it speaks volumes about the fact that you can see us talking about how we don't want that here.

What should we call a group of fediverse servers working together in moderation & community practices?

I've been using Bloc in quotes, because I'm not sure if that's the right or most correct word for it.

A new paper from the Stanford Internet Observatory finds troubling amounts of CSAM on Fediverse servers.

IFTAS is working on providing hash and match service and reporting support for ActivityPub servers, and will be convening platform and app developers to integrate CSAM scanning options in the default installation.

Providers are encouraged to consider blocking servers known to be a source of illegal content.

IFTAS is pleased to announce funding to offer personal digital safety services to Fediverse , community managers, and service administrators.

This service helps reduce harassment by deletion of personal info from data brokers, account hardening, and live incident response and resources.

Please fill out the interest form: https://cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view/6P+--16cAT7ltdM6Q5xfnk0Rdyo41yWMVGWbiS4B1mM/ and I'm happy to answer any questions.

When I was active at the wikipedia there were a group of other writers who would follow me around and mark my articles on women and black people for deletion. They marked my edits CN even when there was a citation. They reworded everything I wrote to minimize the contributions of minorities to history, and hint at theories of racial inferiority. I'd just go to the library and bury them in more citations. It was kind of violent TBH.

Hey , and !

For my MA thesis, I am looking to research on Mastodon, and specifically moderators' experiences with it, how it is enacted on their instance, as well as what it entails.

Are you a moderator of an open registration, general interest instance? If you would be willing to participate in a one-off, 45-60 minute-long (online) interview, please reply to this toot or reach me at k.k.matusewicz@student.rug.nl. Thank you in advance!

Boosts are appreciated:)

As more apps and clients are released, the need for shared resources becomes more important.

IFTAS is exploring the creation of a community-driven list of restricted or flaggable usernames for use by any client or platform developer. Before going to wider public comment, we are seeking expert and experienced input on a minimum necessary list as a very basic Step 1 in reducing inappropriate username creation.

Has anyone considered a Fediverse moderator exchange program?

Basically you'd have a moderator come onto your team and see what your moderation challenges are, how you handle them, etc.

This would be especially useful to marginalized communities which have poor representation on the Fediverse, such as Black instances, Jewish instances, and so on.

Would this be interesting to anyone else?
