Most of the beautiful sunflowers that have bloomed throughout Spring and Summer, many with double or triple flower heads, have now succumbed to flooding rains, high winds and intermittent heat waves.
As we carried the remaining blooms inside to place in vases, lovely native birds, grazing in pairs or nearby groups, watched on, as if to help us honour that moment when we first broadcast those sunflower seeds in the dead of winter.
"Mother Nature's Pinwheel" A bright yellow sunflower, grown from a runaway seed dropped by a seed cake we set out for our wild birdie friends, took root and grew up in our garden this summer.
There is always a show-off, isn't there? That one in the class, in the group, or in this case, the field! that wants to capture your attention...be the star of the show.
