Here's my take on the Recall crapware that's been added to Windoze:
Recall will make use of on-device processing for some time, if/when "incompatible" Copilot+PCs receive support, the learning will be processed on a server.
Local processing will "become" an opt-in feature (because why not) and cloud processing (read: data-mining) becomes the default.
Local processing becomes a paid feature ( i.e the "Pro/Plus" tier) and is no longer available for regular users.
Users enjoy using Windows 11 despite knowing that literally everything they do on their computers (which IMO was never theirs from the start - if they've been using Windows) is up for grabs
now not only can Microsoft get access to all your data, heckers can too (how very generous of Microsoft)
It's a little sad that people have realised this late that #windows is horrible, but it's never too late to switch to a better operating system. Switch to #Linux today! It respects your privacy and has so much choice.
A whole slate of new laptops are coming, and of course, manufacturers are trying to impress us with THINNESS! What about test driving a machine at the complete OPPOSITE of the thinness spectrum? https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45T
It's so rad to do a sponsored video like this, and the first thing they ask is "Can you blast our laptop with a hose?"
It's big, thicc, and chunky, but there are SO MANY things on this Getac I wish I had on "regular" thin laptops...
In a new podcast, Linus(Tech) said that with the upcoming #Windows#AI bruhaha, a lot of users are going to move to #Chromebooks. But just today #Google announced that AI is coming on their #Chromebook line too. Maybe just a chatbot for now, but eventually, it'll be more integrated. The only option (for those who can't stand #Apple), is #Linux, on their existing, older PC. That's why distros running in low RAM are important.
Windows 11's upcoming "Recall" feature has a policy setting that empowers IT depts to disable the feature across devices. If disabled:
✅ Any existing Recall snapshots are deleted
✅ Users are prevented from manually enabling the Recall feature
A nerd nostalgia thread of possible #RetroComputing interest:
From 1993-1994, I was a “technical assistant” in the RF Engineering department of #Comcast#Cellular. Back then, Comcast was a scrappy regional cable #TV operator making its first foray into #mobile telephony, not the multinational #telecommunications and media behemoth we know today. (1/6)
I was a twenty-year-old college #dropout who had lucked into the job after the department’s director noticed that his temporary secretary (me) was way better at automating repetitive tasks in #Microsoft Office than typing up memos.
So he hired me outright (neglecting to increase my administrative-assistant-level wage 😖) and set me loose helping the engineers with their Sun #Unix workstations and #Intel#i486-based PCs running #Windows for Workgroups. (2/6)
Anyway, I did what any underpaid college dropout would do:
• ask #IT for a few extra PCs on the LAN
• distribute the #cellular tower data across #Microsoft#Excel workbooks, one per machine
• write some glue macros to exchange data (probably using Network #DDE or #OLEAutomation)
• babysit the PCs as they inevitably crashed every few hours due to #Windows' flaky cooperative multitasking and its #NetBIOS Frames (then called #NetBEUI) networking protocol (6/6)
Every time I install Windows 11 at work, I feel like I've sold off a little more of my soul.
This operating system is one of the biggest privacy disasters to ever be forced upon the world of personal computing.
Seriously, I know it's intimidating, I know computers are complicated, but you need to ditch Microsoft, and Google. They are not your friends. They are using and exploiting our entire population.
Microsoft Recall isn't just Microsoft looking through the window of your house, watching everything that you do from the outside. Microsoft is inside your house, taking a photo of everything that happens every 5 seconds.
People are mad about LLMs being trained on publicly accessible content. All of this Recall training is coming from inside your house. If any of your friends or family visit you inside your house, Microsoft will be there taking photos of everything you do together, every 5 seconds, learning, recording.
Do not forget that Microsoft is an NSA collaborator. Their behavior is abusive and untrustworthy.
