Hello #Mastodon, I am seeking comments from the community to include in my next newsletter about #Google's change in their privacy policy. (They now say that anything you post online will be used to train their AI models.)
I am especially interested of thoughts from #writers and #artists.
How do you feel about this move? What do you think about placing your content behind a wall to protect it? And will this change how you post online in the future?

Apparently #Google has changed their privacy policy and now says that they'll scrape everything you post online to train their AI tools.
I even post my #Fiction online on #Substack & my #Wordpress blog and now wonder if this is a bad idea.
They say paywalls could deter the scraping.
What do you think writers can do to protect their content? Or should we just roll over and accept that this is the way things will be from now on?

It's pretty disturbing to realise that I will be automatically disliked because I hold a different view of #China. A post about my efforts in trying to find "balanced" information about the current US-China tensions and being exasperated by discussions around it, and how I feel the urge to self-censor lest I be labelled "pro-China". It has not been easy!

As I scroll through #Substack, which is VERY North American, and read their content ... I keep wondering: Do US folks think about perspectives beyond their own?

The answer doesn't seem to be yes 😆

I don't blame US folk in any way. It's just that we Internationals know a lot about the #US and talk, write & even discuss their issues with them, but we don't get that in return.

Interacting on a platform heavily dominated by one #culture can be an experience.

We were just having a normal conversation under the warm Adelaide sun when she said, “I hate Chinese people. Hate them.”

I stared at her, wondering if she realised that I am Chinese.

I rarely write about #politics but I feel it’s important to describe the impact of rising #USChinaTensions on a “normie” member of the #Chinese diaspora. It's this: Sheer, utter frustration and exasperation.

Ditched my Macbook for a Thinkpad, my #iPhone for a #Huawei.

#Apple products are better but I hate being controlled or forced to pay more (way more) for things offered at a better price by other brands. 😁

Brand prestige doesn't affect me at all. If a shiny brand doesn't give me what I want, it is out of there, no matter how classy it is.

Dafuq with calling Yang Guo (杨过) "Penance". I don't care if that is what his name means whatever but you dont have to translate Chinese names like that. I can't take this translation of Jin Yong's book seriously omg 💀

Like, there's this character in Mysterious Lotus Casebook called "Duo Bing", can you imagine if you call him "Always Sick"?? Chinese names don't have to be direct translations omg

Ok, so I flipped out on #SocialMedia yesterday (meaning, I responded and engaged with someone that said something offensive). I blocked him but should've done that before typing that angry reply.
I think I'm on edge because the #Malaysia state elections is around the corner & feel more anxious than usual. So anti-China posts, which is almost like the anti-Chinese posts on right-wing Twitterjaya really triggered me.

A lion's share of the people @kissane surveyed responded that they left #Mastodon because they got yelled at, scolded and lectured when they were here. One major source for this appears to be unrealistic expectations for the use of content warnings.
I have been lectured for CWs & for posts that contradicts an "accepted" narrative. I feel surprisingly horrid after each lecture 😅
I like its decentralised nature, but it can get toxic here.

Question: How do you beat #WorkFromHome loneliness?

I find it ironic that I need to work in a coworking space/cafe a few times a week to keep sane. My home office has been designed to 100% suit me & I focus the best there, but as an extrovert, working at a place with people has been necessary for my #MentalHealth. (I live alone.)
Anyway, am looking for tips to keep away the #RemoteWork blues. Still love it & I think the hybrid system suits me the best :)

Reading the vitriol in the comments section is part of the fun 🤭 OK, I am sadistic. Here's the thing - both sides of the #cat indoor/outdoor debate are right. But it depends on the where you live, the region and the cat in question (apparently there are cats who prefer to stay indoors? Omg where are those cats? I always get the damn opposite.) I think people should chuck away black & white thinking & just accept it is COMPLICATED.

I don't use #TikTok. Don't even have an account. Can't stand the app. But this thing with TikTok in the US is grossing me out. It's one thing to ban the thing but quite another to force the co to sell the platform to a US company. That's like a land grab, even if money is exchanged. This is going to put a chill on business relations not just with China but with companies globally, because they'll be wondering, "will I be the next Bytedance? Will they try to grab my company too?"

Jokes aside, it was bad before but now I have completely given up on buying ebooks or go through Kindle Unlimited as a result. Instead, I do it the slow way, via Goodreads or social media recommendations. That's the only way I know to cut through the noise, and I feel bad for the #WritingCommunity because they have to battle through this trash to be found 😔

How #Brexit is affecting the cost of #Books. Books in #Malaysia is gonna get a hella more expensive, or maybe the bookstores - the tiny amount we have left - will be left getting books from the US. It's sad we don't print our own books but I suspect the business isn't as profitable here as #Malaysians are apparently not great English book readers. The Malay book market, however, is thriving.

Most of you are lovely.
But those of you who police what people say and #CW really need to stop. This was something I didn't even encounter on the hell hole that was #Twitter.
I prefer people to CW political posts, but if they don't, it doesn't make my life hell. I just filter or block of I need to.
We all need to manage our mental health. We shouldn't expect people to do that for us.

Honestly, I am just tired of superhero movies. What, it has been 10 years of them? People want something different.

That's why I have retreated to #KDrama #CDrama spaces. I also watch Western dramas, but usually one thay doesn't run for seasons. I am also SUPER TIRED of tv shows getting cancelled before there is a proper ending!!

Hello #Mastodon and #Tech folks,
Is there an Android Mastodon app that allows me to follow the Local feeds of various instances?

(Am currently using Megolodon, Tooot and Metatext. Perhaps I don't know if this is actually a feature in the app. Fun fact: I once drove a car 100% believing that it had no air conditioners. A year later, my friend showed me the button on the dashboard that activated it. Yeah, I'm that kind of person.)
