Have you ever noticed that most self-driving cars don't have any passengers?
"Deadheading" is an industry term for keeping driverless cars in constant motion, even when they have neither a passenger nor a destination. Waymo & Cruise rely on deadheading to avoid paying for parking.
Why pay the city for public parking when you can store your car on the road for free (as long as it's moving)?
Since I've started keeping track, I've noticed that over 90% of the self-driving cars I see are empty...
Across the globe - north and south, ocean and land - climate change is super-sizing our heatwaves and heat extremes. While this puts us all at risk, some are much more vulnerable than others. Here's why.
First, people living in cities experience up to 4C (7F) hotter temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to the urban heat island effect. The strength of the heat island effect increases with the size of the city, driven by differences in evapotranspiration and convection efficiency between urban versus rural areas. Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1512-9
Even within the same city, though, low-income neighbourhoods can be up to 8C or 15F hotter than high income neighbourhoods in the same city during a heatwave. This means poorer and non-white people are at much greater risk from heat-related stress, illness, and even death. Once again, climate change is a threat multiplier, exacerbating the risks the most vulnerable and marginalized already face today. Even in France, the "green" anti-nuclear activists are given too much time and coverage. If there were ever a country that should know the ideas they advocate for are dangerous, it would be France. After all, if these crazy activists got their way ("energy sobriety" is a cute phrase for not having working lights), then the majority of the country would not have electricity anymore.

This is a thread about photographer Shah Marai, democracy and women's rights in Afghanistan.
As the Taliban are trying to make everybody forget democracy and women's rights ever existed in Afghanistan, I will take every opportunity to remind everybody that democracy and women's rights in Afghanistan have a long history, and also share Shah Marai's photos. So it will be a long thread.
If you're short on time, after the next post you can hit the eject button before the slideshow begins, ok?
@ProjectFearlessness Shah Marai was a very generous journalist, we had him on air on the #BBCWorldService a few times too - unfortunately mostly to bring grim news to a global audience
