FuckFuckNo. 🤦‍♀️

I just want a search engine that works. I have zero need for a godawful "AI" hallucinating mansplainer in my results. Just… no.

Time to move off of DDG. What else is out there?

Edit: yes, it seems to be for real:

The Zuck suck is in full swing. In the few short hours since I started using , has already blocked over 200 data tracking attempts. These include things like "headphone status" and "screen density."

EDIT for clarity: The 200+ attempts may have been overcounted as DDG hadn't tooled their VPN for Threads yet.

EDIT: To anyone who is using this post to bash anyone and everyone who is using Threads, please read this https://writing.exchange/@kreig/110673494921536371

I feel like I post this every few months, but: is there a launcher for AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the latest Launcher, but lets me use a different search engine?

I love the stock launcher:

• At a Glance
• Combined app/web search
• Very little customizability because good defaults
• Smooth animations/integration w/Recents
• Ability to turn off Google Discover feed
• Simple gestures (⬇️ notifications, ⬆️ all apps)

ALL I want is instead of

Duck Duck Go is down because Bing is down.

(Also, you saw the recent AI stuff, right?)

Folks, I know… I use Duck Duck Go also but remember they have venture capital. Enjoy it while it lasts (or let’s fund and build alternatives differently that aren’t temporary businesses with profit motives and exits but commons-owned institutions working for the common good).

I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

Stop 👏 putting 👏 👏 in 👏 every 👏 fucking 👏 thing!

Since my post about the app and is still getting lots of attention, I want to be clear about how I actually feel about .

It's a lot like . Yeah it's a good thing to protect your own personal data, but if we're being honest, it's not effective on an individual scale. We need good legislation at a national level to meaningfully change the game for the benefit of us all. Until then, no matter how careful you are, you're still being negatively affected.

23.5.2024 - Der Tag an dem offensichtlich wurde, dass Bing praktisch die einzige verbliebene Alternative zu Google ist. Alle anderen "Suchmaschinen" sind Bing mit Schlapphut und Trenchcoat. 🕵️

Now that has moved to opt-out advertising without an obvious opt-out (it is there, it is just not obvious), rather than opt-in, I wonder for how much longer I will continue to use it for my www needs.

What's everyone using to search the web these days? I've been using for the past 5 years and I'm pretty happy with it. I do wish there was an option to block some domains from ever showing up in the results, but that would of course require having an account. Any good alternatives to consider?

  • Ecosia
  • Duck Duck Go
  • Start Page
  • Dog Pile
  • Swiss Cows
  • ...

My and experiment is going well. But email feels like a bigger commitment along this path. I looked at the usual suspects like Proton, Mailfence, Fastmail, etc. I also ran across (https://disroot.org). This is much more than just email! They offer and all sorts of other stuff. A group of loosely aggregated open source stuff, and feels less seamless as a result. But definitely interesting. Anyone have any experience with them?

haverholm, to DuckDuckGo
@haverholm@imaginair.es avatar

Really, ?

I've noticed this every now and then over the past year, not in every web search but often enough that it's become a pattern:

A page or so down into the search results, DDG plops in random wikipedia and tourism sites about my general area.

I usually disable the region filter, so I have to assume this is based on my IP address which places me in southern Sweden.

Attached is a screenshot of search results for "red hat closed source" — halfway down the second page of otherwise relevant hits.

For context, Helsingborg is not exactly in my neighbourhood, but it is closer to my location than to the subject of my search...

kev, to DuckDuckGo

So it seems that #DuckDuckGo was down for the last few hours because of a #Bing outage. That's very annoying; DDG should probably get out from under Microsoft's coat tails...

Because of the current issue with Bing that affects DuckDuckGo and Qwant, I did a "research" (5 min look into https://alternativeto.net/software/google-search/?license=opensource ) and found Searx and Searxng. I'm giving a try to Searxng, so far so good finding issues with Ubuntu 24.04 and Wayland. But I keep thinking that there should be a federated way to search the Internet

I've tried in multiple browsers, both with and without plugins enabled, yet DuckDuckGo is still failing to provide search results (here, at least) just responding;

There was an error displaying the search results. Please try again.

It's been this way for several hours. Anyone else seeing the same? I'm in the UK.
