Most likely Phaeolus schweinitzii (dyer's polypore). Boxborough, , 18 July 2015.

"As its common name suggests, the dyer's polypore is an excellent natural source of green, yellow, gold, or brown dye."

Fascinating, as I thought "Dyer" was a person's name. Although "schweinitzii" is from a person's name.

New location visited today: Barnwell country park, Northants. UK. It was a little grey, but seemed nice enough. Its a location that attracts families (which is a good thing).

I did see a pair of mushrooms carved from the trunk of a tree, covered in fungi.

Bird's nest on a rotting stick, 9 October 2021, Petersham, . These are around 1/4 inch in diameter. I first encountered the Nidulariaceae (from the Latin "nidulus" for "small nest") around a year or so ago and they never cease to amaze me.

See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nidulariaceae .

There is only one true God and they are Entropy and Decay :dancing_mushroom: :mario_mushroom: :moomin_mushroom:

> Think long and hard before buying oyster blocks to grow in your house. They are a very aggressive and not at all picky on what types of wood they will consume. If you have any moisture problems they will begin to eat your house. I see these posts constantly in my mushroom ID groups. I started collecting pictures to show people so they could see the dangers themselves. I have not noticed any warning labels of any kind on the packaging, so buyer beware. If you have your heart set on growing mushrooms in your kitchen then I recommend that you pick any kind besides oysters. Lion's mane, maitake, chestnuts or literally anything else beside oysters...unless you rent and don't like your landlord 😆

Still going through all the photos I took on yesterday's walk in the woods. Saw lots of different fungi, more varieties than I've seen before on a single day in the same area of woodland. This is one of the first I found.

Is it edible? Yes. More than once, no idea... (Seriously don't eat mushrooms unless you are absolutely positive they are safe).

A happy little clump of unusual (to me) mushrooms that I noticed on a late evening hike last night. Probably Pholiota limonella that have not fully opened yet.

Anyone know what this is? It is growing where an oak tree had been cut down in central Florida.

So apparently, it is mushroom season around here. It's been fairly dry, so I was not expecting a lot of fungi out in the woods but was quite wrong. I found one puffball about 2 weeks ago but didn't have a camera or my phone with me, so I went back out and took some pictures this time. Puffballs are bright white unless otherwise described in the Alt text.
Recipes and cooking suggestions are most welcome, thanks!

Somewhat kidney shaped puffball mushroom next to a few green blades of grass and some brown leaves and a few walnuts. I actually harvested this one and will probably just try frying it in bread crumbs to start with. Suggestions or recipes are very appreciated.
Five or more puffballs on a green and brown forest floor with a few fallen branches on the ground as well.
Puffball mushroom with two lobes resembling a ghostly white butt. Bonus in bottom left corner a leaf that seems to have a number of insect galls.

@ml and what brought me to mushrooms was an eastern European girlfriend, of course! I tell the story in the special "Mushroom Issue" of Economic Botany published on the 50th anniversary of Valentina Pavlova and Gordon Wasson's ground breaking ethnomycological survey 'Russia, Mushrooms and History' who shared a similar mushroom honeymoon
