I think this is interesting and welcome, especially on mobile devices. It is not without problems to want to quickly check some fact on your phone, download the PDF, go to landscape mode, find the right location in the paper, zoom in, etc.

Hi again #Mastodon!
I joined the fediverse when a lot of my community had not migrated from the bird site, so could only partially reconstruct it here using automated tools. If I followed you there and don’t here, say hi and let’s reconnect!
One of the largest science funders, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will cease paying journal “article processing charges” and instead asks funded researchers to publish their work as preprints. This is fantastic. The costs of the current publishing system drain research funds and exclude too many scientists solely due to financial constraints. Funders are in a much better position to rock the “publishing” boat than researchers. https://gatesfoundationoa.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/24810787662100-Policy-Refresh-2025-Overview
Applications are now open to participate in the Outreachy internship for the December 2023 cohort.
Remember, interns have access to one-on-one mentorship, work with mentors remotely, get a stipend of 7,000 USD, and have a community where they can learn and grow their tech careers.
Submit your initial application as soon as possible; the deadline is August 22, 2023.
I am trying to organise a group of people working in academia (any career level, academic careers or technical) any that are working on #openhardware and affiliated with #uk institutions. If you are one, or if you know one, could you send me a message (or ask them to send me a message?)
The reason for the group is finding ways to work together and advocate for #openscience#hardware!
Hello everyone 👋 ! We have been on Mastodon for a while but recently moved instances to hachyderm so wanted to provide an #introduction. We are an international organisation teaching foundational #coding and #DataScience skills to #researchers worldwide. We advocate for #OpenScience#OpenSource practices through workshops using our openly available lessons co-developed by our global community. More information: carpentries.org. Excited to be here; thank you for having us!
Do you work in open source? Do you think it has a funding problem? If so, please take my 10 minute survey at https://opensource.study. By participating, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.
This survey is part of a research project at ASU and is completely voluntary. If you have any questions about participation, please reach out to me here.
Why we think every scholarly organization, but in particular scholarly societies, should not just migrate to #Mastodon, but host their own instances - and what that has to do with the journals many scholarly societies use to generate revenue:
🇬🇧 As part of a scientific community committed to #openness, we have decided to discontinue our engagement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by the end of this year. The account will remain, but we will no longer post or interact there. We are happy to exchange ideas with you here on Mastodon and on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/helmholtz-open-science-office/
We are cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funding & performing organisations, aiming to make full and immediate Open Access to research publications a reality by implementing #Plan_S
y'all - HAPPY NEW YEAR!! i'm SUPER excited to announce that we are FINALLY publishing our @pyOpenSci tutorial series on how to create a #python package!! yahoo. check out our very first beginner-friendly lesson here:
