One of the hallmarks of light here at certain times of of the year is the entire horizon is rimed with pink. Three days until the Sun returns. #Nunavut #Arctic

So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

Last one. For now. A dog team heads out Adams Sound into the teeth of a storm. The landscape fades into the drifting snow. photography

Last one for Sunday. Owls (and other Arctic Predators, avian and mammal) use rises and hummocks to scan for prey, using the same spots year after year. Their waste and remains of prey fertilize the spot and the plants grow taller there than the surrounding tundra. Here a juvenile Snowy peers at me from such a spot.

In an ATV trip to Innaaluup Nuvua last summer we stopped at the top of this magnificent valley above Innaarulaalikuluk and Admiralty Inlet.

Tomorrow is the last day of Sun in town. (Technically another week but because of the topography we last see it Nov 5). Sun down all during this cabin trip.

" used to be rare in the , but as the region warms, so-called rain-on-snow events are becoming more common. The rains accelerate ice loss, trigger flooding, landslides, and avalanches, and create problems for wildlife and the Indigenous people who depend on them."

Say goodnight: Tuesday saw the last sunset of the year at Ulġuniq (Wainright, Inupiat country), at 70.64ºN the second-most northerly community in Alaska. This FAA webcam image is from almost exactly solar noon, with the sun at its highest point in the sky for the day. Next sunrise will be on January 20, 2024. NWS automated wx station has not reported online for a month.

Nunavut became a territory 25 years ago today. I’m grateful to Inuit who had the vision and the will to see this happen, to those who continue to work for this land, and especially those who make my home a special place to live.

Sea ice in October 2023 north of Alaska and the Russian far northeast coast was less extensive than last year and of course far below typical late 20th century typical levels. The Pacific side of the is a very different place environmentally in the autumn than it was even 30 years ago.

Tiriaq. A throwback to summer. An Ermine pauses. One of the challenges of photographing these little guys is that they hardly ever seem to stop moving.
