And there it is, monetization before decentralization. #Bluesky
They're selling domains. I knew it.

PS this is what I mean about the MSM and tech press jumping on the Bluesky hype bubble. It's complete with really shitty clickbait headlines like "Bluesky's best shot at success is to embrace shitposting" or "'BlueSky' wants to market itself as a 'Musk-free' space, says CEO". I can almost see the alien bat baby on the cover of Weekly World News supermarket tabloids when reading these search results LOL. Honestly this feels like an episode of the HBO show Silicon Valley almost at this point. #bluesky#msm#technews
For the past year I have been torn between "Let's convince them of the fun of Mastodon" and "Fuck them, we don't need them" and now I'm a real mess.
In 2013 I convinced 99% of my friends to move on from WhatsApp to Telegram and for a while thought I could do the same with X (formerly Twitter) users and Mastodon. But it feels like living my life in a purgatory, constantly tormented. "Mastodon is difficult, Bluesky is a breath of fresh air", "I don't get Mastodon and its nerds, but Bluesky is wonderful".
Reading about #bluesky, it's impressive to me how little Jack has learned.
As somebody who (briefly) worked at Twitter on anti-abuse, the place is a goldmine of lessons on fucked-up behavior. And the CEO comes out of the cryptocurrency space, which also has a rich history of garbage people run wild.
But instead of something that applies any of that, they have apparently produced the same sort of tired neoliberal marketplace-of-ideas horseshit product that Twitter was to start.
Wired says #Bluesky is the space for “the Internet elite”.
So what they’re saying is that #Bluesky is for status seekers and clout chasers.
You know, the spot for media gatekeepers to pad their articles with social media posts that say something to the effect of, “This!” and “This!” and “You, sir, just won the Internet!”
I think the Fediverse should grow up and stop throwing poo at Bluesky.
Fact: Its protocol has interesting ideas but is not fully designed yet and nobody knows if it can be made to scale well.
Fact: It attracts celebrities and demographics who’ve bounced off Mastodon.
Fact: I dunno what it’s gonna turn out to be and neither do you.
False: It’s a Jack-Dorsey-owned VC-funded crypto scam.
I think there are things to learn. But you have to stop shouting first.
Some folks on X and Bluesky have shown their dislike towards ”the feel-good attitude” of people on Mastodon. In their world Mastodon is too matter-of-fact, no sense of humor and not raggedy enough. In fact, they prefer filth over wholesomeness. It strange. For me it’s like talking with a drug addict as a sober person. Being sober doesn’t make me Jesus Christ, arrogant or a good person, but it reflects the negative feelings in the addicted mind.
One of the type once used the hashtag #JeSuisRolle to fuck with me, since I use my time on other social medias often to talk about the advantages of Mastodon. This concept of being a victim of social media is so funny to me I have started using that hashtag myself.
The #BlueskyBridge by Snarfed was soft-launched this week - still very alpha and a lot of things don't work, but posts are starting to come through both ways 🙂
Right now you need to follow the bridge to get bridged (the DM-request mechanism isn't finished yet). I'm tracking the bridged accounts (M->B) here: https://blue.mackuba.eu/directory/fedi
I have seen quite a few Mastodon/Fediverse “extremists” crying foul about how the default Mastodon app defaults new users to the mastodon.social instance, and how a universal Mastodon/Fediverse search will “hurt the network”, etc. etc.
Thing is, these “extremists” are also holding onto a geeky/nerdy idea of what they think the Fediverse should and shouldn’t be, and are risking allowing Bluesky to jump ahead of us.
I realize the mistake in posting this to Mastodon, whose whole deal is decentralization...
But I had a thought. One of the things people seem to like most about #BlueSky right now is just that you can post jokes and memes and stuff without being bombarded by hatred. And that's because nobody invited the trolls.
So... what about a totally invite-only social media platform? Invite-only, forever.
The trick: if someone gets banned, the person who invited them gets banned too.
I can still like you very much, while I tell you why helping Jack Dorsey realize his libertarian-cum-fascist #Bluesky brain worm dreams is a very bad choice for my country. And the planet & public health & the climate & everyone I love.
Jack Dorsey dreamed up Bluesky because he doesn’t want to ban Nazis & insurrectionists & climate deniers, but to personally profit from their online recruitment efforts, he hand-picked its CEO, & he wants this man to be President:
Well, this is interesting: @heiseonline has much more #Follower here on #Mastodon and even more on #X than on #Bluesky or #Threads. But if you take that in account, when looking at the visits (just for today), that's a very different picture of visits per follower.
It's very relative of course (in absolute numbers #Twitter and #Mastodon are still far ahead)!
Alles himmlisch oder was?
Inkl Follow/Block-Charts, Massenfollowings & Aufmerksamkeits-Betteleien!
Freue mich ueber euer Feedback & den Support via Boosts & Reposts. Danke #Mastodon 🙏
so on #Bluesky, rather than going with the well-documented and defined webfinger protocol, behind the .well-known directory, decided to make their own shit for verifying domains via HTTP.
thus, somebody took the S3 bucket name "xrpc" and now is s3.amazonaws.com on the platform
