Kids and teens are feeling #ClimateAnxiety. Here's how parents can help.
"Hall said kids feel powerless when it comes to #ClimateChange. But when kids can engage in some activism, that can help.
Showing youth what’s being done to address climate change, and not just focusing on the negative, has a big effect on building informed hope, Braus said."
One of my first childhood memories is the fixed idea of how I will die. I imagined (or, simply knew) I will die of extreme heat.
I forgot of that memory for many years.
Lately the memory (or, 'the knowledge') is coming back and it is triggered by climate change news and research.
I already started dreaming about enormous waves, storms, heat and similar in last few weeks.
I hope collective subconscious will wake up soon enough to stop this consumerism madness. #climateanxiety
Interesting interview with James Bridle on AI and other non-human intelligence, rethinking the computer, the illusion of humanity's emancipation from the environment, ecological technology and rebuilding agency in response to climate trauma and grief.
#ClimateDiary Normally I avoid reading things about #ClimateAnxiety or #ClimateGrief (maybe a form of denial?) but I did read this and am glad I did. All three tips spot on:
Build social cohesion, to help your community weather adversity
Dispel the silence about climate crisis with open discussion
Stay abreast of international issues and apply what you learn locally
It’s spurred me on to do more of all three! #ClimateAction
I know that I have a steep hill to climb in order to help Carbon Dioxide Removal #CDR recover from the damage the #FossilFools and just plain grifters have done to the reputation of Direct Air Capture #DAC.
I'm hoping that the tangible product #BioChar can help to convince people to reconsider DAC for CDR.
The demonstrated recalcitrance of terra preta and ability of any and every farmer/gardener to manufacture and sequester it makes it one of my favorite approaches. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adh8499
Occasionally I am contacted by people who have severe climate anxiety (or climate depression). In my experience there is very often something else in the background going on. But I wonder if anyone on here has good resources to point people towards (other than psychological help) #ClimateAnxiety#KlimaAngst#KlimaDepression#ClimateDepression
"[S]haring painful feelings with others energizes, nourishes and invigorates the participants – and brings to life humor and a sense of togetherness.
[W]hen people open up to the flow of their emotional experiences, which can include despair, sadness, guilt, rage, and fear, they feel as if a burden has been lifted from their shoulders. When we dare to test the depth of our pain, we realize that it is not bottomless."
@rahmstorf I used to think this would not be in my lifetime and by generating our own power, having own water supply and growing our own food, my family & I would be able to eke out a reasonable life if we were somehow able to keep what we’d built for ourselves. All seems increasingly unlikely. #climateanxiety#crimeagainsthumanity
#ClimateDiary OK, confession. After a two months long persuasion campaign by OH I relented and now in #California for two weeks. Combining work meetings, research, conference, family/friends visits and family holiday, but still acutely aware of #Hypocrisy and massive #ClimateGuilt. Especially when yesterday on the plane we saw the #Canada#Wildfires, whilst contributing directly ourselves. What are we doing
@pvonhellermannn I’m still feeling guilty for flying to Crete a few years ago under huge family pressure. Just in time to see the damage climate change is doing to the island in the form of terrible landslides before it could be sorted out in time for the main tourist season. My #ClimateAnxiety was through the roof.
At least we’re trying though, it’s so hard to go against the flow.
Recently I catch myself becoming more and more fatigued not by the #climateAnxiety , but by the stubborn unwillingness of people to imagine any alternatives to our current course.
I get it, I am not a writer, my #writing is slow and subpar. I'm better at research, creating prompts and such.
It's just so disheartening to share all my work with yet another aspiring writer only to hear... "but I was thinking of a cyberpunk dystopia, but with an evil socialist twist this time!".
There was previously no term for the feeling of desolation in the face of ongoing environmental destruction. Now in German there's #Solastalgie (from "solace", English, and -algie, Greek "pain").
You can also listen how to cope psychologically with #Klimaangst/ #Climateanxiety in this interview/podcast. (In German)
A friend recently proposed that the reason my #therapy sessions have reached a plateau is because no therapist can address the existential dread and grief I feel for the planet & its inhabitants. No matter how you deal with your #ClimateEmotions, once your eyes have been opened, you cannot forget that every choice you make affects everyone else.
#ClimateProgress as a first demonstration project using new sodium-ion technology of 5MW/10MWh battery energy storage system was officialized last month (14 July) between project partners Great Power, a battery technology company, Qingdao Beian Holdings and Noan Technology Co.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced ten projects that will receive $10.9M to advance innovative technologies to extract and refine battery-grade lithium from geothermal brines across the country. By bringing back lithium production to the U.S., this vital material’s supply chain will be able to support the growth of our domestic #CleanEnergy economy.
Episode 3.4: #Capitalism, #Community, and #Friendship with Joey Ayoub is out now to our Patreon supporters, with a general release coming next Monday.
Why is it easier to imagine a zombie apocalypse than it is a generative, #sustainable future? This question drives Joey Ayoub, host of The Fire These Times: in fact, this season of his #podcast is partially about solarpunk and #generative#futures. Tune in today to listen to @arielkroon and @joey discussing imaginative expansion of solarpunk, the “realist” impulse, climate anxiety and grief, and community building in a #crisis. Also The Office. Trust us, it’s an important part of this whole conversation. Check it out and support us here:
"Dr. Steven Taylor, a UBC professor of psychiatry and clinical psychologist, discusses the steps people can take to cope with #ClimateAnxiety – and how those feelings can be turned into a motivating force for #climate action.
It’s important to remember that some level of anxiety is normal, and even healthy. The problem arises when that anxiety reaches unhealthy and debilitating levels."
I am so filled with dread at what is happening with the climate. The collapse of the Gulf Stream is imminent. What do I do with this knowledge? It’s the same dread I was raised with as a kid believing Armageddon is nigh, only this time the terror is scientific and not religious. #exJW#ClimateAnxiety#ClimateDiary
My climate anxiety has been running high lately, keeping me from sleeping. The world is on fire and people are either ignoring it or acting like it’s just an inconvenience. I’ll be walking to the dentist today while wearing a mask on account of forest fires bigger than entire nations. #ClimateCatastrophe#ClimateAnxiety#CanadaWildfires#ClimateDiary
What a delight to talk with Pastor Pihkala. He shares a grounded and centered theology of hope through meaning, and when prompted offers advice to Pastors and parents about how to help parishioners and children alike deal with eco-anxiety, or "climate anxiety."
