doesn't mean a thing on the "Human Information Harvesting".

The fact that these or those don't care about their or doesn't make it less of a criminally punishable act.

Would anyone make rape, theft, torture, scams, assassination any less of a criminally punishable act?

Democracy is not possible under the threat of "Human Information Harvesting" as it directly attempts against your freedom to choose, sometimes, even obliterating it by managing your behaviour

— a lot of implementors are Fedi-first, but in @nodebb's case, we're adding integration to already existing and established forums. It makes me wonder whether I should think about individual users' to have their content federated outside of the local instance.

All along I assumed I'd just build in a global on-off switch for AP integration, but maybe we need more granular user-level opt-in/out here 🤔

We live in an increasingly "de facto consent" world.

Consent, given, "de facto",

IS NOT CONSENT.

It bypasses consent, then tells you you consented.

It's intellectual rape.

It takes advantage of ignorance, then it doubles down, by supporting systems that don't educate...

...it's a cycle.

And it keeps wars happening, so that war-profiteers keep making money, when humans die.

We are being fed, to ourselves, already, and it's only 2023.

And.we see this with all kind of shit being normalized.

Like not actually asking for but allowing people not to and only rely "(maybe) later" instead of no.

My unmitigated contempt for tech companies that do this has no bounds. It’s a “yes or no” question. If you lack the integrity to permit people to actually say “no” you’re failing as a company and as human beings. Sorry, but it’s true. Grow up.

benjaoming,
@benjaoming@social.data.coop avatar

@djnavarro indeed, immediately came to mind when I saw this - why should we (users) be very concerned when a company with this mindset asks about consent?

My guess is that the culture around users and their data is so arrogant and self-entitled, that the CTOs, software engineers and UX'ers already assumed the user's consent before showing the prompt.

Showing a prompt is easy, managing the lifecycle of user data isn't.

Involuntary Consent

: The Illusion of Choice in Japan’s Adult Video Industry

The popularity of pornography is predicated on the idea that those participating have given their consent. That is what allows the porn industry to dominate the media economy today, generating staggering sums of money. Looking at behind-the-scenes negotiations and abuses in Japan's adult video industry, author Akiko Takeyama challenges this pervasive notion.

Today I filed a formal complaint against with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner for their illegal deployment of detection technologies.

Under Article 5(3) of 2002/58/EC YouTube are legally obligated to obtain consent before storing or accessing information already stored on an end user's terminal equipment unless it is strictly necessary for the provisions of the requested service.

In 2016 the EU Commission confirmed in writing that adblock detection requires consent.

You can help by filing your own complaint here:

The more complaints the DPC receives - the quicker they will act.

Never forget that in privacy consent is key. And consent must be free and informed to be valid consent.

Coercion is not consent.

Absence of choice is not consent.

Ignorance of available choices is not consent either.

😞 You have misunderstood.

I have not said that quotes are, per se, bad.

⭐ What I have said is that some people absolutely do not want them. And I said I think we should request for their consent before forcing them to use them.

🎓 Don't believe everything you read.

🎮 On a related topic: later this month the NGO I work with is publishing the first of a series of free video games that teach and encourage the use of critical thinking.

You seem to agree that I have not said quotes are, per se, bad.

But it seems you disagree with my support for those who don't want their content to be used without their explicit consent.

Although what you say about reasonableness and speech in a public forum is true, that does not mean we should simply ignore others' wishes.

Because:

1️⃣ By making such a feature opt-in we are more likely to see this feature offered because fewer users will object.

2️⃣ If the feature is mandatory on everybody's account some people will stop posting publicly or just abandon the platform.

3️⃣ Acting with consent is good policy.
