I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.
The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.
If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.
The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.
@feditips I don’t think this is a four alarm fire just yet and it may be that acting like it will cause people to abandon this part of the #Fediverse to avoid it. More concerning is the lack of response on Eugen’s side. Has there been any answer from him?
Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?
I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.
I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!
@drewtoynbee while you're at it, you might want to consider using #castopod the #activitypub enabled podcasting application so people on the #fediverse can follow you from right here, while still publishing to all the usual places but without being tied into a specific service.
I don’t fully agree with your prognosis, but the excessive hosting costs are undeniable and must be resolved sooner rather than later.
One thing about your post is unclear to me: Are you still hopeful about the future of #ActivityPub and the #fediverse at large?
Faster implementations like #Akkoma and #gotosocial are coming along. I’m especially excited about Kitsune by @0x0 because of its performance and ease of setup.
Uns gibt es zwar schon seit über 40 Jahren, wir kämpfen weltweit gewaltfrei für den Schutz der Lebensgrundlagen, aber hier sind wir ganz neu. Wir freuen uns auf den Austausch mit euch. #neuhier
Again #Mastodon continues to impress me with the amount of interaction I get on my art posts. Around the same amount as I do on my Instagram where I have 8 times the followers.
As more #Fediverse projects grow and come online, the Fediverse is where creatives will want to be.
It still feels a bit beta imo, but it’s easy to see why the design is more likely to have mass appeal – especially once it becomes a bit more stable.
I’m not yet motivated to move anywhere yet, mostly because @ivory has greatly improved the #Mastodon UX for me.
But overall it’s great to experiment in the #fediverse. You get to see the magic of #ActivityPub in action: the simple idea that the apps we choose should not bar us from talking to each other.
All these talk about #BlueSky and complaints about #Mastodon this, #ActivityPub that, #Fediverse this, and #Decentralisation that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from #Jollibee.
The problem stems from the fediverse ending up unofficially represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.
What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.
No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.
Also, no one is saying #ATP shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.
Here's a #challenge: Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.
Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

By the way, https://calckey.social recently got an update that enables push notifications for #iOS. The web app is really well made and you can check it out for yourself!
The thing that intrigues me about #Mastodon & the #fediverse is how open & modular it all can be. From the many clients, the hub approach (hubzilla, Friendica) , WordPress, Activity Pub etc. Of course that is precisely the kind of moving target that also puts a broader user base off but I much more feel like I'm in a good place (a safer space) than other places I've tried before.
Clayton Christensen, sadly not with us any more, described the “law of the conservation of attractive profits” in his 2003 book “The Innovator’s Solution”. It’s been intriguing to me ever since. I wonder whether we can apply it to the revolutionary impact the #fediverse can/will/might/has on the #social media industry.
I think it can, and should be applied to understand opportunities and perils — by everybody who has a stake in the fediverse project, even if you want business to stay out.
I am currently reading a book by Max Fisher called "The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Minds and Our World". It is a very well researched account of how various social networking companies' continual drive to increase engagement led to numerous devastating real-world consequences. It also argues that these engagement methodologies are actually altering how we think about the world - and not for the better.
Why bring this up? I see many posts on how the fediverse must to more to attract people who are on other networks - in other words, "increase engagement". Some of those suggestions mirror the exact things the monolithic networks are doing that this book has researched so well.
The fediverse will always be a work in progress, and suggestions are always a good idea - but even without the profit model, we could make bad choices and further this problem. This is a chance to get it right - or at least make it better.
Does anyone have an estimate on the number of #UK users on the #Fediverse?
By my (hastily-conducted and not at all comprehensive) research there are about 26K "active users" (as reported by the instances' about pages) reported across a dozen or so UK-focused Mastodon instances, but obviously there will be folks on instances that aren't geographically-focused (and a long tail of single-user instances)
