I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

@feditips This is a very important thought: what if mastodon.social and the legal entity behind it become an ever-larger percentage of the ? When do we need to say "stop"? And how do we say "stop"?

@Imoptimal@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips

Please stop spreading panic about the uncertain future of , and blaming one of it's creators/platforms for the downfall.

If you know anything about the , is that it can't be bought.

The true danger comes from the (closed) platforms joining fediverse.
They can (ab)use their money to attract more people to those platforms, than all of the open source platforms combined.

Calckey just had an update!

There's lots of bug fixes, but there's a few neat features that have been added such as:

  • New content warning design
  • Add continuation for thread reply level
  • Localization in Polish, Russian, Greek, Spanish, Japanese

Thrilling stuff!

Which bug fix/feature are you most excited about?

The Mastodon centralists are coming out of the woodwork today with, “But it makes onboarding easier!”

So what?

The goal here isn’t to grow for the purpose of growth. Growth, in and of itself, is meaningless.

The goal is to decentralize social media.

arinbasu1,

I believe that with , one does not have to “leave” any server for anything else. The more the better, after all these are all federated, aren’t they?

arinbasu1,

This is merely a thought “experiment”, how might it be if we had something like “calckey.social” back in this time last year, when many people were leaving twitter in search of better alternatives, and we had people coming over to Mastodon but then ended up either not using or leaving because some of them found Mastodon to be confusing to use, and anytime people brought up the issue of Fediverse, these users would say Fediverse is too confusing (conflating Fediverse with Mastodon).

In hindsight, seems to me that if they discovered the power of with something like calckey.social, they would have stayed on. Sadly, although there was pleroma/misskey/calckey/foundkey, none of these gained the kind of user base that’d have been helpful to “spread” the fediverse around, 🙂 Mastodon is great but there is definitely room for others.

"What if Google starts their own Google-branded Fediverse instance?"

They already did.

Google Buzz used OStatus as part of its protocol stack.

OStatus later evolved into ActivityPub.

As for Google Buzz? Like most Google social media projects, it died -- later to be replaced by Google+.

maegul,
@maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

@kevinyoung my memory of it is that many thought it was good but ended up just staying on Facebook because that’s where people were, and the greater amount of manual control you had in Google+ was good in theory but annoying in practice for enough people that it just never really stood a chance.

Lessons for v big social? (An exercise for the reader)

I am contemplating the idea of starting a instance. I thought if it in the past, but it seemed so cumbersome that I gave up. Mastodon felt easier and since I started to use containers (k8s), it is even better - a breeze to upgrade.

Has things change? Has Pixelfed became easier to deploy and admin?

My most used social medias in 2010:

  1. Twitter
  2. Facebook
  3. Foursquare
  4. Bebo
  5. StumbleUpon

My most used social medias in 2023:

  1. Mastodon
  2. Instagram
  3. Reddit

In the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.

However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.

I'm really hopeful about the rise of the open Internet, , etc. We need this.

Okay, we need to talk, especially those who are tech-savvy.

I love you all, but let's not start immediately creating a new Linux with or in general.

The community, when a distro like started to gain popularity, quickly made it a target to almost take down. And, to be honest, they were not particularly friendly in their speeches or reflections to newbies who decided to take the plunge. 1/3

Hey #Fediverse , this re - #introduction #Mastodon post!

I'm known as @expertmanofficial , have people that enjoy following my content!

Soon, my previous account from mstdn.social will be moved to defcon.social - at least I planning to.

Here are reasons for me to move:

  • Mstdn used to have 1K characters for posts and had lots of my favorite themes - not anymore sadly it's 500 characters now and no themes :-(

  • Defcon has 1K chars, but still, no themes, the default one is customized.

  • Both has good moderation that I respect to :-)

Since 500 characters isn't enough me, and I don't know any other Mastodon instance that would have good moderation at the same level as well as Mstdn does , I think it's time for me to move to DefCon....

I am Terrorskull, clearly, and I am new to . I have been on for about a year but decided I should check out what else the has to offer. For now, at least, this will be my backup account to @terrorskull, but I still plan to post here from time to time. The web interface seems significantly better, dare I say... modern!

So, who am I? I am a by profession. I am also a and who spends a lot of time consuming various media related to , and , and . When not involved in one of those areas, I am probably doing something related or taking care of my special needs .

This concludes my introduction. Thank you for reading. Feel free to follow me here and/or on my @terrorskull account for random musings and sharing/boosts of various science and gaming related information.

Before I forget, the required cat photo is included, as a cat photo is always required for an introduction.

Welcome in, o dismayed souls, to a slightly kinder version of social media. A version not controlled by corporations, or even medium businesses (unless they have their own instance for their employees...like journalists.)

You've probably made your first account on - and, hey, that's a way to get started! But after a few months - or a few days if you're feeling particularly adventurous - you may want to move to a less-populated server.

alfredo_liberal, to fediverse

We got a big problem folks if most of the user growth happens on mastodon.social it will make it easier for people like Musk to buy the entire and if that happens game over for us all. Mastodon.social doesn't have to be your only option if you want advanced search come over to which is run by @supernovae if you want a higher character limit also come to universeodon which has 1000 calckey.social has 3000

I had never seen an Oystercatcher in person before so I was more than thrilled to get a glimpse of this one on an afternoon photo outing. The name of this unique, orange-beaked and eye avian may indicate that their diet consists only of oysters, the coastal birds diet is more varied, dining on bivalves, snails, worms, mussels, fish and crabs.

American Oystercatcher is here: https://www.pictorem.com/225405/American%20Oystercatcher%20.html
