Al Jazeera rejected accusations that it harmed Israel's #security as a "dangerous & ridiculous lie" that puts its #journalists at risk & said it reserved the right to "pursue every #legal step"
The network is funded by the #Qatar govt & has been critical of Israel's #military op in Gaza.…

Its World Press Freedom Day & its worth remembering that not all journalist are the supine, press-release rehashing, wage slaves of corporate Right wing media companies...
Across the world & even here in Britain, there are journalists braving bullying, economic sanctions, libel cases, deaths threats & actual fatalities to reveal to us what is going on in the world.
Without them, the plight of democracy would be even worse than it is.
“When we lose a journalist, we lose our eyes and ears to the outside world. We lose a voice for the voiceless,” Volker Turk, UN high commissioner for human rights said in a statement today.
“World Press Freedom Day was established to celebrate the value of truth and to protect the people who work courageously to uncover it.”

“In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we wish to share a strong message of solidarity and recognition to those Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances,” said Mauricio Weibel, chair of the international jury of media professionals, who recommended the winners of the prize.
“Objectivity is a tricky concept. Ultimately, we’re with the skeptics who say it never really made sense. And yet! For a long time “objectivity” packaged together many important ideas about truth and trust. American journalism has disowned that brand without offering a replacement. At the end this post, I’ll point to some starting points for figuring out what values a new generation of journalists could promote instead.” [Jonathan Stray/NiemanLab]

"We have also been losing a number of colleagues and family members while reporting. It adds to the huge psychological pressure Palestinian journalists face since the start of the war.
Often we come across bloody scenes or grieving mothers mourning the loss of a son. Yet, we have to cast all that aside and return back to stand up in front of the camera and keep reporting."
As of April 26, 2024, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 97 journalists and media workers were among the more than 35,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with more than 34,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel.

"It’s not an easy job as we are surrounded by danger, with the fear of being shelled any moment. We keep moving from one place to another to get reliable information or to move according to Israeli military orders to be in areas that are supposed to be in the so-called safe zones. But we have witnessed genocidal acts even in those areas."

"The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), an organization representing more than 600,000 media workers across 146 countries, endorsed the boycott push on Saturday, as did the National Writers Union (NWU)."
Protests are expected outside the dinner's venue
