EU governments want a broad legal carve-out to continue to use #spyware such as #Pegasus against reporters.
Governments are "taking dangerous steps towards legalising unacceptable forms of #surveillance against #journalists and their #sources. If confirmed, these changes would kill all the potential the European #MediaFreedomAct#EMFA has to stop spyware scandals in the EU," says @edri's @chlobemy
New call for pitches from journalists for MIT Technology Review's upcoming annual issue on 🖥️🧪breakthroughs🔓😮. We're looking for big swings: narrative features, essential profiles, and sharp reported essays about recent/unfolding breakthroughs.
With the media industry's precarity worse than ever, independent #journalists are increasingly relying on subscription #newsletters But this fragmentation may be making us less #media literate.
@andreagrimes on the a-la-carte-ification of #news & #opinion
Abu Akleh was shot in the head while on assignment in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. She was wearing a press vest and standing with other journalists when killed.

I've now seen three different articles about this posted to the #Oregon hashtag. None of them mentions the #Paiute people or any #Indigenous people at all. One of them uncritically frames the Bering Strait land bridge theory as fact, and another calls the revelation that people were here earlier than that a "discovery."
According to #Gaza’s government media office, Israel’s military has now killed 97 journalists in the Strip.
Israel has barred international media from entering Gaza, firsthand reporting on the onslaught there has been left to Palestinians already locked into the occupied territory - documenting their own genocide.
WaPo obtained & reviewed footage from #Thuraya’s drone, which was stored in a memory card recovered at the scene & sent to a production company in #Turkey. No Israeli soldiers, aircraft or other military equipment are visible in the footage taken that day
V RSF:
6 #journalists working for indy media were arrested in #Russia in a span of a few hours at the end of March. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns these arbitrary arrests as a flagrant attempt to silence Russia’s last independent media outlets and calls for the release of those still held.
The power #Israel disproportionately wields here, notably across a number of Western democratic states, is staggering. It is manifested in moves to not publish material critical of the country’s assault on #Gaza, and, in some cases, directly target #journalists who dare violate such injunctions.
#Censorship is a manifold beast. The conventional approach is that of the blanking redaction: the “nothing to see here” school of regulation.
During a break in the closing arguments of his New York civil fraud trial, Donald Trump claimed that Attorney General Letitia James was responsible for forcing the oil and gas conglomerate ExxonMobil to leave the state and move to Texas. There is one small problem with the former president’s accusation: ExxonMobile left New York in 1989, three decades before James assumed the role of attorney general. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-blames-new-york-ag-exxon-moving-texas-1234944871/
