Instant messaging is more complicated than you'd think. Sending a message from one device to another seems simple, but it's hard; especially on mobile. NAT, Firewalls, smartphone battery optimisation are all technical challenges, but then you also got user expectations. Users expect to see the same messages in the same order on every device. They want to be able to send photos, files, locations, voice messages and much more. On top of all that, full end to end encryption is a must have nowadays. Especially if you let average people run their own servers.

Matrix seems overly complex, but once you attempt to reinvent it, you end up with the same level of complexity.

Ok without support for searching chat room history, messages are effectively ephemeral... like connecting to without a bouncer 🤦🏼‍♂️

This is going to probably make a lot of people angry/restart IRC/matrix flamewars, but I feel like it has to be said if we are going to push as a more open alternative to the other walled chat gardens (proprietary or otherwise) out there. I, a IRC user for decades, want Matrix to succeed, but the UX needs to suck a lot less than it does today.

Are you referencing some new drama, @craftyguy? I thought most Matrix clients support history search now?

craftyguy,
@craftyguy@freeradical.zone avatar

@cnx nope, no new drama (that I know of). Just some recent experiences using Element (android and web app), and some others. It's mostly broken/missing when in rooms using E2EE

I launched a matrix homeserver with open registration at https://matrix.nadeko.net

Hosted on 🇨🇱

Feel free to register.

It also includes:

  • A Whatsapp Bridge
  • and a Telegram Bridge (not tested with private messages)

Since this Matrix instance is selfhosted, the uptime of the instance will not be the BEST and downtimes can happen so use it at your own risk. However, you can see how stable my selfhosted server is here: https://stats.uptimerobot.com/89VnzSKAn/793739181

@fijxu if the instance is somewhat moderated for spam you'd might be interested to get onto https://servers.joinmatrix.org/ via :asra.gr but it kinda requires running for some time etc

fijxu,
@fijxu@noc.social avatar

@mahdi1234 I'm not going to add it to the list for now. It has no moderation at all because I am the only and only admin of the server, but I accept DMs from other homeservers admins to remove users that use my homeserver for spam/abuse/illegal shit.

I have been hosting matrix.zzls.xyz for 1 year more or less but it was always invite only.

If this lands on your feed, tell me about different features that are just missing in Matrix.

It can be anything, but please don't include memes like "unable to decrypt message" or other things that are already in the works, or maybe has already been merged (e.g media captions)

Some examples include better forwarded messages, rich profiles, or a live location sharing, just to name a few.

(I am writing something about this, boosts appreciated!)

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@cyrus

  1. support incoming and outgoing RSS feeds so you're serving as a decentralized hub for data flowing through those channels.

  2. support basic features for writers as outlined on textcasting.org.

and thanks for asking! 🙂

shadowwwind, (edited )
@shadowwwind@fosstodon.org avatar

@cyrus - on profiles show shared rooms. Maybe shared contacts if that is even possible.

  • Having the options to add notes to other users Profiles (for yourself only).
    User Bios

  • Giving names to certain permission levels

  • permission level colours

@bkoehn@diaspora.koehn.com:> is great, but using it can be a PITA. CLI clients are not ubiquitous, E2EE is complicated and requires local state, and the python client is extremely slow (like 10 seconds to send a message slow). I’ve often wanted a fast, easy way to post a message into a room in a way that’s simple and secure.Enter , a simple CLI tool that can also run as a daemon. You create a user for it to run as, configure it to use that user, and invite that user to whatever rooms you want.

Remotely, you can send a POST request and it will put the data into the room. No fuss, no muss.

So I can run curl --fail -d "hello, matrix" 'https://pokem.koehn.com/<room id>' from any script and it will put the message there automagically, even if the room is E2EE.

Feel free to invite @pokem:koehn.com to your matrix room (on any home server) and you can do the same.

Matrix certrainly has its rough edges, but I find it awesome that pretty much every major Linux community now has their dedicated space. All federated, of course.

Dzisiaj sprawdzam, nadal działa.

A jak jest u Was?

super_user_do,

@amministratore
Ma bluesky non usciva fuori dallo stesso capitalismo di sorveglianza che tanto cirtichiamo?
@bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy @informapirata

informapirata,
@informapirata@mastodon.uno avatar

@super_user_do ni... 😁
