"Making research relevant: The importance of trusted research environments and knowledge exchange to maximise real-world impact" - Katherine O'Sullivan of University of Aberdeen

Our biophysicist designed a sensor and I'm pitching in on development of a driver circuit. We couldn't measure the sensor's electrical properties with anything in our lab. So I came up with a way to calculate values and today confirmed it has an inductance of only a few picohenries. Now we can build a driver. #Science#Research#SundayFunday
You might be a #linguist, or an #ML#engineer, doing things like data specifications, filtering or pre-processing or training #ASR, #STT or #TTS models, or you might work in #fairness or #bias evaluation.
If so, I’d love your help to understand current #dataset#documentation practices, and what we can do to make them better as part of my #PhD#research 🤓 ⌨️ 🎤
The #survey takes 10-20 minutes to complete, and you can opt in to win one of 3 gift cards valued at $AUD 50 each.

As part of a summer course, I'm teaching a few weeks about reproducible research workflows.
I'm planning on talking about Makefiles + READMEs + Git + file organization - what else should I include, and what are your favorite resources about reproducible research?
Canadian PhD students and postgrads plan mass walkout over low pay - when are UK PhD students, postdocs, etc going to follow suit? #Science#Research#Academia
Interesting study on transgender athletic performance by medical physicist Joanna Harper, who is transgender. Her work is groundbreaking, serving as a data-backed retort to the myth that transgender women have an unfair advantage in sports. And she, herself, is a runner.
‘People from different cultures are more alike than we first thought. All over the world, people tend to respond to requests for help and help others. This is the conclusion of a new linguistic study.. The research shows that across cultures, small requests for help are as much as seven times more likely to be granted than denied. And if people do refuse, they explain why.’ Researchers include @dingemansemarkhttps://www.ru.nl/en/research/research-news/the-human-tendency-to-help-exists-in-all-cultures#research#science#socialscience
How much does the academic peer review cost in notional staff time?
This paper got me thinking about how much my time commitment to the review process has cost my employers over my career so far.
The authors in this paper suggest each paper review has a US dollar cost of $1272 of time commitment.
And a previous paper suggests a US dollar cost of $1900 per person per year for the lead author submitting a paper. That is the time taken to format and submit a paper and then revise it.
These figures blow out to more than one billion US dollar annual cost for peer review alone. Which of course is typically done for free and often poorly recognized.
What do #children think about #climatechange? What do they worry about? What are they frustrated about? What do young people want us to know about their experiences with this often overwhelming topic? If you know a concerned kid, they should know they’re not alone.
Do you work with #voice or #speech#data? You might contribute data, write data specifications for collection, perform filtering or pre-processing, train #ASR or #TTS models, or design or perform evaluations on #ML speech models.
If so, I’d love your help to understand current #dataset#documentation practices, and what we can do to make them better as part of my #PhD#research

"On a macro level, our research could provide a new hypothesis for why adults exhibit greater resistance to learning, anxiety, and addiction compared to children and adolescents."
I made this image for a thesis presentation i did a while back. The data has been accepted and will be published soon!
