I love Mastodon and I haven't been on Twitter for months. But I feel like I'm not meeting new people here and frankly a bit bored. I want to discover new voices and see more opinions, which is hard when there are no suggested people to follow. Tips anyone?
But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".
How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?
No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.
Looks like @gruber ‘s position is predicated on design, #UI, and onboarding. I have no invite for bluesky so it is clearly not an inclusive media, or open to all and inviting, and Gruber clearly does not care about inclusivity.
But even on the grounds of design, UI, ease of onboarding, there are star examples that incorporate #ActivityPub protocol and in #Fediverse. I am partial to #Calckey and calckey.social, and Calckey does provide a good example. Perhaps the design gurus and social media pundits need to browse a little more of the Fediverse before their pronouncements.
I've seen a few mastodon posts (with photos attached) include the #pixelfed hashtag and I'm curious why.
I'm not complaining, we could use the increased visibility! I'm just super curious to know if they know about @pixelfed or just seen the hashtag before and used it.
@dansup@pixelfed yes. There could be an #ui to define set of tags as templates like "camera canon", "camera mft", "nature", "city", "nude", and later during post creation option to include necessary tags, few of them (few templates). That would be great. I will make feature request:)
@ssamulczyk@dansup@pixelfed eh man, I guess such approach makes mastodon still having crap #UX#UI and not being developed in terms of usability, but #Pixelfed teams listens to the people. But in details: 1) I don't want to type anything 2) I want to have ability to select from the list 3) I want to have it OS agnostic (I use desktop web)
Hallo Fediverse,
@YoSoyFreeman I agree. Media isn't cropped, the timeline loads continuously, it works reliably and reasonably fast. I couldn't switch to any app yet because there is always something that puts me off.
The only thing I don't like is that the #Mastodon#Web#UI doesn't use the entire width of the screen because of the menu on the side.
Trying to highlight a hyperlink for the purposes of copy and pasting the words that are visible within said hyperlink is a total PITA.
Reverting to DOM inspection to copy the inner text of a node is such an obnoxious dance.
Bonus points when the right-click context menu is disabled by same UI dipheads, so then you have to pop open the DOM inspector by digging through menus or remembering the F12 key.
What's with this trend of apps telling you what you just did? When I hit "/" to hide the filmstrip, Lightroom throws an alert reading "Hiding filmstrip." When I paste from one app to another in iOS, it throws an alert "Pasting to #Flickr from Bear." When I like an image on #Glass, it throws an alert "Appreciation sent to So-and-So." Why??? I know what I just did - that's why I did it! I hate this #UI clutter that serves no purpose. What's driving it?
I was quite active in #WordPress development from 2004 till ~2021. I've created multiple large custom WP installations, built plugins, contributed to Core, spoke at WordCamps etc. People considered me to be a WordPress expert. I have a Masters degree in #InteractionDesign.
Today I've tried Full Site Editing using the default theme. After an hour trying to coax Gutenberg into the simple design I wanted I had to give up.
Is it just me or is FSE a horrible #UI#UX experience & buggy as hell?
Desktop/Mobile: Would you position a #hamburger menu on the bottom left? I assume its better to reach with a thumb than top right. On the other hand its not common and hence not learned, could lead to confusion.
I would like to share this reordered Google Drive #UI, I would feel myself much comfortable this way: breadcrumb is more important to be closer, than filters, IMHO. And cleaner with space as well. Don't you think?
I was driving in a new car with my mom last year and showing off how I could ask Siri for directions verbally and have them spoken and displayed on my car's screen, and she noted that I had changed Siri's voice to male. I told her I don't like the implications of female-coding an object that I own and use as an assistant. She told me she prefers the female voice because "I don't like having a man tell me what to do."
Gnome's new lock screen shows that a tiny change to the UI can have a massive impact on the look. Just by making the profile picture bigger (and I think removing the border if there ever was one), the lock screen looks way better.
Today is GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day). I am sharing some foundational (typography, color, & spacing) accessibility design tips for everyone. Enjoy!
p.s. this goes without saying, add alt text to your images.
