Acquaintances just got back from working in a sensible city in a Baltic country. Their ~8 year old daughter is pissed off at the loss of independence she had overseas. She got used to taking city buses on her own and biking without worry.

“Glaciers and ice cover are retreating before our eyes. Rising temperatures have accelerated – and also disrupted – the water cycle. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. We are seeing much heavier precipitation episodes and flooding. And at the opposite extreme, more evaporation, dry soils and more intense droughts,”

For the first half of autumn 2022, this same creek was too shallow for coho and chum salmon to return upstream to spawn.

We watched the fish school in front of the beach and creek mouth; watched them jump and ripple the near-shore ocean waters with their fins. Those fish waited for well over a month. The usual rains that swell the creek waters to double, triple, quadruple their summertime size, did not come.

I wrote a column for the local paper that was published last week.

With the climate crisis in full swing I was trying to point out the need for managed retreat from not only physical infrastructure but since everything requires the use of fossil fuels still we need managed retreat from the non-essential.

Note: The title was the editor's decision.

Cars and trucks are among the largest sources of climate-warming pollution in the U.S., accounting for around 23% of national emissions in 2021.

But do EVs really lower carbon emissions, even when the electricity feeding the car comes from heavily polluting sources? The answer – thankfully – is a resounding yes. Compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, electric cars emit substantially less carbon dioxide pollution, no matter which form of energy is used to recharge them. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2023/09/electric-vehicles-reduce-carbon-pollution-in-all-u-s-states/

I'm pretty uncomfortable with the federal govts recent moves to improve housing availability by making things easier for landlords and property developers, with tax credits and financial subsidies.

Landlords and property speculators are among the most vile parties in Canada.

I'd rather see more direct affordability improvements for people, to help them avoid permanent, precarious tenancy.

AndrewHenry,
@AndrewHenry@mastodon.energy avatar

@johnefrancis @dairpo

Worked for a contractor a few decades ago in SW Ontario who told me the story of how a local home builder took advantage of federal subsidies for new housing. The incentive was generous and was paid out when the foundation was poured. The builder poured the foundation collected the subsidy and walked away.

I did not know we had a Canadian spelling for maneuver.

You can let that one slide but don’t you dare drop the ‘u’ after ‘o’.

Used a “Honeywell TurboForce Portable Air Circulating Box/Floor Fan” as it is noticeably quieter than the typical box fan. Only drawback is the speed settings are on the back! I set it on low and taped the fan on the box. Plug it in and it is on.

After all, a future with a billion inhabited planets hosting ten billion humans each, all mired in existential despair, is a vastly more enticing prospect for the Black Pharaoh than anything He'd gain by maximally immiserating everybody RIGHT NOW ... surely that's got to justify a little TLC for His flock in the short term if it gets Him there?

the extreme heat has created an unusual gap between the end of the berry-picking season and the start of the apple season, meaning some employees may wait weeks without pay before they can resume work.

“Usually they’ll go from cherries and berries and they’ll wait a week and they go into apples,” said Velasquez, “But if you add climate change, they might wait 19 days to be transferred.”
