It’s just been pointed out to me that the reason Apple runs a trade-in programme for older devices is so they can reduce the size of the used market, and has fuck all to do with recycling.

That’s blown my tiny mind.

Further to this, as I get older and (hopefully) more wise to the world, one of the things that’s really hit me is how everything has a price. Everything.

In this situation, Apple has decided that it’s worth them giving someone a £150 discount on a new phone in order to guarantee that they’ll make more money selling newer phones.

As someone who never really thinks about economy, it’s amazing to me that people’s brains work that way on an industrial scale.

According to this article, they shred literal tons of devices, regardless of whether they’re serviceable. Just yoink the battery and shred the rest.

Saw a post on here yesterday that massively clarified how to view Mastodon in a way that I kinda wish someone had pointed out back when I first joined.

When you invite someone to join Mastodon, invite them to join your server, to interact with the good people there. From that server, they can then interact with other people.

I (and presumably many, many others) saw it ass-backwards at the start, by having to pick a random server to be able to access the wider Mastodon service.

I'm currently reading Laziness Does Not Exist, and it's certainly an eye-opener.

Read a part this morning that noted that studies show that, in an 8 hour shift, people work an average of 3 hours. That's astonishing.

And it's not that people just don't care (though that's certainly a part of it), it's that we just aren't designed to work for 8 solid hours at a time. There's no evolutionary reason why our brains need to do that. So they don't.

Also met some excellent doors.
