I have to say that after a bit of a faff to get window managers to run caused most probably by yours truly. I am finding to be really better than expected. I can run the likes of Sway, River, Hyprland without issue and I'm really liking ZFS with encryption and OMG Geli doesn't half unlock the filesystem fast. It unlocks on this poor wee Celeron faster than my AMD Thinkpad P14s does with luks and grub. Not saying I'm a convert just saying that's all. 😉 :freebsd:

CHALLENGE: Can this 12-processor, 3GHz linux laptop perform a Gradle build and play a piece of music off youtube.com at the same time without the music skipping or the mouse cursor becoming unresponsive?

RESULT: No

Void_Setup,

@mcc Not even with SWAP enabled?

Void_Setup,

@mcc Yep, that sounds about right.

Left the Linux Mint Discord I was in because everyone there just felt like an elitist tech bro. One guy tried to push me into using Arch knowing I was a Linux beginner.

I want to learn, not be pressured into doing things a certain way.

Void_Setup,

@chirpbirb @HoptheScorbunny I feel you both there. My poison was the XDA Discord, and a few particular users that tried forcing Arch on me too.

Just to spite them, jumped from Ubuntu straight into . :3

So more than a year on, @protonmail still hasn’t released a Proton Drive app. Why? It’s very frustrating. Proton should have and versions of all its apps, and they should all be updated frequently. Not everyone is willing to use Microsoft Windows.

Void_Setup,

@protonmail @seanb Niiiiiice! You all rock, don't let anyone say otherwise. <3

I cleaned the and Lucy for and placed him inside our "new" outdoor light (vintage 1965 lantern with a DIY bracket and wired up for mains supply instead of a petroleum lantern).

Lantern at daylight. It is bolted to a bracket that mounts it to the wall. The lantern is black and features a small chimney. Windows are frosted glass. The bracket is mounted with shiny brass screws.

It’s that time of year again where I remember back to being a kid after trick or treating, we’d go stand in line at the local hospital to get our candy X-rayed because the local news had everyone convinced there was an epidemic of needles and razor blades in candy. In my mind, this was around the same time as the dungeons and dragons satanic panic, but it’s all foggy now. We didn’t have social media back then, but the old people still managed to self organize around some insane made up shit.

Void_Setup,

@jerry Huh, so this phenomenon existed back then too. Fun!

Sarcasm aside, can't believe they still talk about stuff like that occasionally. It slowly became a joke thankfully, but there's still believers out there. My stance on it?

If I find a firearm in a Twix I'm re-visiting the house that gave me it and DEMANDING they teach me their wizardry. :P

I've been told people on this website enjoy me trying to think through computer problems out loud while in incredible pain, so good news: I'm taking my new Thinkpad T14 (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111218408629532857) out of the box and I'm going to install Linux on it first thing. So expect a LOT of complaining.

Void_Setup,

@mcc Serious question; what made you choose Ubuntu? Sure it's a decent beginner distro...but when stuff like this happens it's like tinkering with one thing breaks everything in my experience. [For that, Debian seems the more stable route from what everyone else says. Could be wrong though.]

Void_Setup,

@mcc Gotcha.

Void_Setup,

@nixCraft Void, but that's mainly due to the green. Nothing else.

Other than that, probably Kali as other people have said, OR TailsOS.

Greetings everyone!

Name's Void_Setup, but feel free to call me whatever. I'm just another open to learning new things while building upon what I already know. :P

My main knacks include recent fascinations with tech [] and , tinkering, and recycling/modifying old hardware with miscellaneous parts I find [which I might have dumpster dove for]. Example: (WIP) Turning an old laptop display into a desktop monitor (shoutout to )! Plus, MASSIVE NERD!! My fav. distro is !

I also dabble in with , #C, and , but I might give a go once I've become fluent in both python and . I also dabble in , , and too, but I need more practice before I can model/sketch my ideas.

Finally, my main project? BUILDING A SUIT WITH A PI 5 THAT RIVALS IRON MAN HIMSELF. I WILL FIND A WAY_

Anyways, that's enough from me for now. Peace!

Sincerely,

It is getting increasingly awkward that my only daily drivers are a Win10 machine and a laptop based on antiquated MacOS. I should get a simple Linux laptop.

Last time I tried to do this though it turned out any laptops that run Linux with full hardware support out of the box are pretty expensive.

On the topic of power management, the only potential risk I believe that comes with my choice of ThinkPad comes down to malware utilities like Plundervolt; malware designed to take advantage of Intel CPU's capable of undervolting to some extent. I might not know much about it myself, however, this should not be too big an issue as mentioned here: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/241227/what-is-the-plundervolt-attack, https://www.techtarget.com/searchsecurity/definition/Plundervolt.

Even so, I have found the T450s to be reliable, durable, snappy, and easily usable with Linux installed [my preference is Void Linux musl, but anything works]. I went with the Core i7 variant off https://www.backmarket.com/en-us [a refurbisher I learned of a year or two ago]. Hope this helps!

Post your fails.

Pwn your imposter.

Void_Setup,

@thegibson Setting up on to into for installing software to control my new hand/motion tracker/controller, only for the software to spit out this:

Error: Missing Dependency: glibc

Thought I could cheat the system. Long story short, installed the GLIBC variant of Void on a USB, booted into it, and redid the process of converting and installing (guide coming soon).

Void_Setup,

@thegibson Oh yeah, one more thing [most recent].

Accidentally shorted the ground wire of an electric scooter with one of the controller's red wires, still connected to the on/off switch, with two 12V batteries still connected to the circuit. [Model E300]

Wire got fused the moment it collided, and just DUMPED voltage in the wrong flippin' direction. Fried the entire board after I just modified it.

yay, more money i get to spend...ah well, at least I'm getting a replacement that should give me a bigger boost than stock.
