I don't sell pajamas or play basketball. I make servers handle a lot of traffic and in my free time I play with micro-controllers and melt plastic.

Here is an #introduction post for the newest member of the family, Timber.

He is a 4 year old long haired ginger lap buddy #cat adopted this morning from the Twitchy Tails Rescue in #Springfield #Oregon.

His interests include scritches, noisy baths, and losing access to his only brain cell while watching leaves blow around through the window.

I buy from as little as possible these days. But I've noticed lately, when I do, that when I get the message telling my package is out for delivery, that means it'll arrive tomorrow. Anyone else?

ONA is conducting a letter writing campaign to draw attention to the hospital closure.

Folks of and @eugene: Our only hospital on this side of the river is closing. The ER's last day is set to be Dec. 1. The Oregon Nurses Association has started this letter writing campaign to hopefully draw the attention of the OHA and Governor.

Please consider sending, even if just the pre-prepared form letter. https://actionnetwork.org/letters/save-eugenes-hospital

An observation:

Many people seem to be under the impression that series hybrid drivetrains (where the ICE powerplant turns a generator which powers a motor) are superior to parallel hybrid (where the ICE can spin the wheels directly).

I think a lot of this comes from knowledge of diesel-electric locomotives, and trains are known to be efficient. But, in fact, those trains would be even more efficient if they could parallelize the diesel engine - that's just really hard, and isn't the point.

bishma,
@bishma@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify I'm curious, does that hold true for the whole power curve?

I've been led to believe that, in addition to the electric insta-torque, you get the benefit of always running the combustion engine its the most fuel efficient RPMs (RsPM?). I guess I assumed that made up for power conversion losses.

Interesting price comparison: I am seeing online sale of some older Thinkpads (a few years old, great for Linux). To go from 8 gb RAM to 16gb is an extra $30. Contrast with an Mac Mini M2; to go from 8gb to 16gb of RAM is $250. What a rip off.

bishma,
@bishma@mas.to avatar

@Jgmeadows Cut them some slack, it take a lot of extra work for them to solder the memory to the SBC to prevent you from upgrading later.

Any good tips for printing TPE (88)? I see a lot of contradictory info - some say heated bed, some say unheated, some say textured PEI is thre worst material to print on but that's the only material I managed to print something at all on (smooth or textured glass is worse). 10-20mm/s, no difference, it just loosens on layer 2, and is generally gummy and disgusting (even dried in dryer!).

Please only direct experience, articles contradict each other.

bishma,
@bishma@mas.to avatar

@stooovie When I'm working with anything that's new to me I usually check the prusa material table.

Based on that and what you describe, it might be worth the cleanup to print on PEI with gluestick.

The Lemmy server I belong to also hosts just about every other service too. And I've been thinking about giving a try because the feature set looks nice.

Anyone can set up and run their own server on here.

This is great for lots of reasons (outlined here: https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/) but it also means that a small minority of servers may be run by nasty people, and potentially contain nasty content.

Fortunately, most server admins use server blocks to prevent their users having any contact with rogue servers.

If you see something bad on here, it's important to report it so that your admin can take action. Click on ⋯ and "report" to report a post.

bishma,
@bishma@mas.to avatar

@feditips Are their resources to help admins keep up with rogue or otherwise problematic instances? Like is there a group that announces or maintains a list of problematic servers admins might want to block or defederate with?

If you live somewhere that offers no-questions-asked mail-in voting, and your election commission gives you the option to automatically get mail ballots with each election, I would highly recommend doing this.

Earlier in the year a ballot just showed up in the mail. It was for the very local elections like school board, parks commissioner, stuff like that.

I almost certainly wouldn't have realized the election was even happening, but having the ballot in-hand made sure I voted in it.

bishma,
@bishma@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify 100% Mail In voting is one of the best things Oregon ever did.

Though I've voted in every election this millennium and I've never gotten an "I Voted" Sticker... I am a not a tiny bit bitter about that.
