Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

Thanks especially to people building software, making art, telling their personal stories, inviting friends or organizations, joining groups, making jokes, thinking hard, making connections, liking, reading, listening, watching, administering, moderating, supporting, sharing, being kind, making friends, answering questions, and otherwise laying down the careful and intricate network of connections between people, software and content that is slowly but surely changing the world.

OK, I'm throwing it open to the fediverse.

I'll be in Brussels for a few days early next week.

I'd love to meet with folks at the European Commission involved in decentralized social networking, even just to say hello.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

EDIT: "EU" -> "European Commission", h/t @kevinteljeur

Friends, I need your help. I'm working on the Far Horizons chapter for the book, where I discuss future applications for AP. I've got dating, enterprise software, job search, IOT, marketplace, and others.

What's a far-out application of ActivityPub you've thought of that I might not have?

Fediverse pitchbot: "1 million new users have joined the fediverse this week. Why this spells trouble for the social web."

"Too much of a good thing? Another beautiful Mastodon client drops in the App Store. Here's why that's bad news for Gargron."

"Trouble in paradise? People are expressing various opinions on Mastodon. Why this level of discourse will tear the fediverse apart."

One part of the enshittification process that @pluralistic leaves out of his equation is third-party developers. Developers are like the canaries in the enshittification coalmine.

They create a huge part of the value of a platform for both end users and businesses.

Platforms encourage this value creation in the ecosystem, and cherry-pick the best apps to either clone or acquire.

Then, they shiv developers with an API TOS change.

If you're working on , I highly recommend the new draft report on using HTTP Signature and ActivityPub by @snarfed.org@snarfed.org and @nightpool . This draft just hit the stands this week, and it's a really complete coverage of the topic.

Hi, friend! I hope things are going well for you at Hive/Post News/Substack Notes/T2/Blue Sky/Nostr.

I'm writing because I think your path to survival is connecting to the fediverse. You can open up to millions of new users, and show them what makes your platform and your community special.

If you want to talk about how to make that happen, please feel free to contact me. I want your light to shine bright to the entire Social Web.

The conjunction of Bill C-18 in Canada with the rumoured release of an ActivityPub-enabled service from Meta seems incredibly fortuitous.

I will now shout for those in the back of the room.

MEDIA COMPANIES IN CANADA: NOW IS THE TIME TO SET UP YOUR SITE ON THE FEDIVERSE.

YOUR SITE, YOUR RULES. REACH YOUR AUDIENCE DIRECTLY.

I'm grieving today. She had a hard time finding her place in a world that didn't have an easy assigned spot for her. But her absolute refusal to accept injustice kept her always struggling to redesign and reconfigure the constraining structures around her -- from Web standards to healthcare. She felt both joy and sadness very deeply and would not shield you from either. People who do so much good for so many people deserve so much better. RIP.

I want to get some things clear about the potential re-chartering of the Social Web Working Group.

The focus is extremely tight: to make editorial and other corrections to ActivityPub and Activity Streams 2.0.

Friends, if you haven't signed up for Fediforum yet, can I suggest that you take a few minutes to do so? It's a great event for talking about the social, technical and policy issues around building this big old fediverse:
