One man’s awakening:

Last year, I had a life-changing experience at 90 years old. I went to space, after decades of playing an iconic science-fiction character who was exploring the universe. I thought I would experience a deep connection with the immensity around us, a deep call for endless exploration.

I was absolutely wrong. The strongest feeling, that dominated everything else by far, was the deepest grief that I had ever experienced.

f800gecko,
@f800gecko@mastodon.online avatar

I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. I didn’t see infinite possibilities of worlds to explore, adventures to have, or living creatures to connect with. I saw the deepest darkness I could have ever imagined, contrasting so starkly with the welcoming warmth of our nurturing home planet.

@f800gecko@mastodon.online avatar

This was an immensely powerful awakening for me. It filled me with sadness. I realized that we had spent decades, if not centuries, being obsessed with looking away, with looking outside. I did my share in popularizing the idea that space was the final frontier. But I had to get to space to understand that Earth is and will stay our only home. And that we have been ravaging it, relentlessly, making it uninhabitable.

Gaza today:

Millions bombed, starving, displaced. Thirty-three thousand dead and counting. Unknown numbers crushed, maimed, buried.

Canada remains afraid to decline to participate.

It would seem Simon Wiesenthal Center, et. al., have felt the need to reach for project work beyond the daily tide of antisemitism (which is quite real) now the last of the WWII era genocidal Nazi maniacs have all but died out.

How ironic they should land in a pogrom of Israel’s own making.

And how incompetent must Israel’s fascist boobs be not to have finished off ‘Hamas’ by now, even with the weight and slaughter-power of US-supplied arms.

In an interview with a group of European newspapers reported by the BBC, Tusk said: “I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past. It’s real and it started over two years ago.”

Because these abusive clown-faced ghouls can’t bear anything not yet crushed under concrete & pavement and restricted to paid access benefitting Ford’s organized crime pals.

The incompetence of the fascist Israeli regime: 30,000+ dead, scores of thousands maimed, millions displaced, virtually all public infrastructure destroyed—hospitals included—and Netanyahu is still no closer to having finished off the ‘Hamas’ bogeyman.

A bogeyman that is, obviously, no less than a proxy for all Gazans, rooted in the hatred and stereotyping of racism, and one of Israel’s most successful propaganda triumphs, given the West’s readiness to swallow it.

Here in Canada, when the full horror is known , watch Poilievre blame Trudeau for it having been ‘on his watch’ despite himself being a rabid supporter of the ethnic cleansing program underway.

He’ll be partly-right-enough to dodge his own political demise - Trudeau as prime minister will have had ample access to people who know well the reality.

Let's be clear on what it means that a famine in the technical sense is imminent for 1.1 million people in Gaza according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

One of the criteria is 2 deaths per 10,000 people from outright starvation or the interaction of malnutrition and disease... PER DAY.

The people who understand this stuff are saying that a situation is imminent where there are AT LEAST 200 starvation deaths every day.

Look at a map of Palestinian communities in Israel and you’ll see this is a decades-long pattern:

“Armed clashes intensify in Al-Zahraa City, south of Gaza, as Israel finishes building a fortified highway, effectively splitting the enclave in two, from the north to the south.”

Palestinians are heavily policed on such highways (if allowed on them at all, need it be said).

Netanyahu’s contribution has been to accelerate to process.

We wouldn’t need a carbon tax battle if the auto and oil industries and their marketing accomplices were appropriately regulated.

But voters who despise any tax must have their Titanic-sized freedom-vehicle status symbols as our top priority.

So we’ll all pay in wasted energy, waste CO2 & heat, needless deaths, hiked insurance, torched communities and an endless wildfire season—all of which beats modest conservation measures, it would seem.

    “believes it has the right to decide the Palestinians’ fate & future”

    Somewhat understandable given the British having done exactly that with Balfour Declaration of 1917 and then again in 1947-48 when they packed up and departed the region, leaving the Palestinians’ fate entirely in the hands of the new overlord.

    The West has never taken meaningful steps to right what followed. Why would they when there’s no money or geopolitical gain to be had from intervening?

    f800gecko,
    @f800gecko@mastodon.online avatar

    @DrALJONES

    Our last hope now is to shame the West into pressing for change, a gambit that hinges upon the West itself remaining sufficiently non-fascistic so the majority of its own citizens are free to express their outrage.

    @f800gecko@mastodon.online avatar

    @DrALJONES

    I agree with all that. At present it certainly does feel like the West’s fascistic elements remain very much in play—while FB, Instagram and all the rest provide a soporific distraction from issues like these for the masses (while also stoking the fewer but far more virulent crazies in the shadows); I sometimes wonder if that’s why governments have been so slow to regulate them more stringently.

    Absolutely. It’s shameful how we crowd these platforms regardless (I’ve left all but Messenger, which I seem stuck with owing to family there).
