I'm so sorry.

(no I'm not. Not really.)

If you’re on strike and it’s disrupted things for “regular people” just know that there are a lot of us rooting for you— We get it. Media aren’t being very supportive framing the strike as all the fault of workers— as if we all have to take whatever we are offered & be silent.

The mood is different in the country than it was 15 or 30 years ago— No one is buying that striking workers are greedy. We’re all in this same race to the bottom and it’s good to see people fighting the current.

  • Isopods have 7 pairs of legs all pretty much the same length.

  • 74** logic gates have ... 7 pairs of legs all the same length!

Coincidence? I think not!

Clearly, each isopod contains 4 logic gates. This Armadillidium vulgare has 4 AND gates. Don't forget to connect power & ground legs & use pull-down resistors on inputs.

(best practice is to simply ask the rollie to position itself in your circuit.)

Like most natural systems. they use micro-voltages, don't use standard 5V power sources.

Niki Haley wants to raise the SS retirement age to 70.

Life expectancy for African American men in the US is 62*.

For men in general? 73.

Enjoy your negative 8 and 3 years everyone.

*This is for black men born in 1960 ... the cohort who would be retiring soon if they weren't dropping like flies.

OK last announcement.

If you live in Ohio you should have voted "no" by now. But, if you haven't you still have till the end of Aug 8th! Time to search up your poll site and get going!

(But, don't feel bad if this referendum caught you off guard, Ohio Republicans are hoping no one will show up to vote.)

Vote NO on issue 1. It's a strange constitutional amendment that changes the threshold to make it possible for a small group to veto everything. It's the only thing on the ballot.

Listening to my husband argue with the cat.

"I can't make it stop raining, Pica."
"Maarah!"
"I can't. It's not like the sink or the shower."
"MaaaaraHH!!"
"You didn't like it when I opened the door. It's January. It's wet and cold."
"RRRAaanah!"
"OK OK"
opens door
"MARAAAHH!"
"I know it's cold!"
"rrrrah?"
"I can't turn off the rain."
"murrah."
"I think you're unreasonable too."

on the one hand it's amusing to make fun of medieval drawings of cats, but on the other hand... IDK maybe they were better at drawing than we think and we just need to look at cats more carefully to understand.

Fascinated that the owners of social media sites see API usage and web scraping as "data pillaging" -- immoral theft! Stealing! and yet, if you or I say that we should be paid for the content we create on social media the idea is laughed out of the room.

Social media is worthless without people and all the things we create do and say.

It's so valuable that these boys are trying to lock it in a vault.

~one billion
~1,000,000,000

That's how many parking spaces there are in the USA. For every car? About 4 empty spaces... just sitting there, not absorbing the rain, making flooding worse, making cities hotter as they bake in the summer sun.

Our built environment and laws bend over backwards to make driving the only viable transportation option in nearly every imaginable context.

You need to pay for healthcare, but almost never parking.

(Pointing this out makes libertarian heads explode.)

Does Mitch McConnell have a family? Does anyone love him enough to talk with him about... the finite nature of life. The preciousness of hours, minutes seconds?

How from dust we all have come and to dust we shall all return?

He could be petting some kittens. Listening to the sound of a child's laugh-- Dude really wants to die in front of us holding a pen mid-way through signing a bill that forces orphans to work in coal mines or something.

Send a postcard to Clarence Thomas asking that he recuse himself from decisions that involve Jan. 6 since his wife is among the organizers.

The post card can just say

"Clarence Thomas, you must recuse yourself from Jan. 6 cases. "

That's it.

It is fitting that there are a pile of
letters from the public demanding this.

Aw yeah ban teens from social media but make it legal for them to work the night shift in the cold chopping room at the meat-chopping factory.

These kids will hate us all forever and we will deserve it.

The active shooter drills, failing to protect trans teens, taking their damn phones, burning their books and sending them to the factory. Fail fail fail fail fail.

Thinking about vicious roving gangs of teens who just can't get enough of evolution.

(I assume that these evil teens also have books is part of what is so scary here? IDK. This would be a fun group Halloween costume IMO)

A new study has found a terrible bottleneck in human ancestors about 900k years ago. There were as few as 1000 individuals left ... if this is verified further there was a time when we almost didn't make it.

"A Mississippi slaughterhouse that supplies chicken to Chick-fil-A is directly to blame for the death of a 16-year-old worker who was sucked into equipment in July and killed within minutes."

I work with teens every day and can't get this story out of my mind. Despite this the push to weaken labor regulations continues.

This is where all those "right to work" for teens laws lead.

Children should be in algebra class, goddamit.

There are many different sides to the "Dave Debate"

Should people named Dave exist? Should they have rights? Are they people at all?

I'm not anti-Dave, in fact I am a great supporter of Daves. I just think we need to ask some questions. But if you ask these questions people get so mad.

Shouldn't we at least have a sober reasonable discussion? What's wrong with that?

Mathematics has many daughters. Nearly all are beautiful. Physics & Chemistry are dutiful & visit home often. Life science is always away on some exotic research trip, hardly has time to write. Three of the girls live at home: Statistics, Computer Science ... & The Other One.

Statistics spent some time in a sanitarium, no one talks about it. She's doing better now, dotes on mother. Computer Science puts on a suit each day for her Big Important Job. But she still never moved out. 1/

There is a whole genre of video that consists of model railroad hobbyists with realistic set ups doing video from the front of the train (making the world seem to scale) and their cats terrorizing the trains like the cutest, fuzziest kaiju.

Chat GPT is great. If you are a teacher with writer’s block you can ask for something like “End of year comment for student who needs to have more confidence in their work and who asks good questions” and it will spit out paragraphs of the most bland, corporate, superlative content-free, schlock you’ve ever seen. This will make you so angry that you’ll remember how to write.

It’s all “actionable” this and “out of the box” that … omg just poke both my eyes out right now.

Several schools in Arkansas are defiantly teaching AP African American history. The state has warned them that the students will earn no credits.

Republicans continue to describe Black history as "indoctrination" and "teaching children to hate America" -- showing that they might benefit from the course themselves.

If you are politically engaged it's very easy to only talk to other politically engaged people & waste a lot of energy trying to convince other informed people with complex political frameworks to change their mind.

This is the least effective way to win elections ever. If you find it fun and learn from it, great, but it's not doing anything.

I called an old HS friend and she knew NOTHING about what republicans were up to. Not the book banning, not the trans attacks. She will vote now.
