i don't know the legal details, but afaik in poland and the rest of warsaw pact area, they seem to conflate communism with (russian) totalitarian imperialism/colonialism practices and the downstream effects on the smaller countries. unsurprisingly.

there's also the whole sucking up to US / "west" / capital in the hopes of getting help with rid(d)ing themselves of russian/ussr influence

eastern europe's attitude on communism seems kinda like US appreciation for monarchy circa 1776, stalin and the ussr having done fucked communism there for another hundred years or two.
(and the occasional use of soviet flags by the invading forces currently in ukraine isn't helping it any)

not to particularly disagree with you, this is imho one of the reasons why them rich get away with it

I know I said I went to bed already.

a reminder for all the anti-car people who think that some miraculous urbanism is going to save us.

a large number of disabled people cannot walk down the block even to get to the bus. personal automobiles are freedom/independence for us.

we can't just walk to the store, to the bakery, to the coffee shop, even if they were made closer.

I can walk from my RV in the driveway to the door of the back house two or three times, if that.

stop .

buses and plumber vans (hopefully electric) are gonna be there anyway, no-one (except reactionary demagogues) is saying there won't be /any/ cars at all.
the argument is that, getting around without a car needs to be convenient enough that most ppl choose to do so.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Serious question, please boost for reach.

I’m a 50+ white male.

How many old white guys out there would be willing join a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to oppose old white guys in positions of power? How many people would be willing to provide financial support for the same?

Nothing like this currently exists in the U.S. and I think it could be a damn effective form of protest. Personally, I’m sick and tired of seeing old fucking white guys in power everywhere I turn. Am I an aberration?

Oh, and despite thinking of myself as a bit of wordsmith, I’m admittedly terrible at acronym generation. What’s a good name for an organization pursuing said mission?

A few more hints that the current blockade is being coordinated by

  1. There were several protests: March 2023 farmers’ protest, then May 2023 truckers’ protest, which in November 2023 turned into truckers’ blockade. Protests had many legitimate postulates, blockade was caused largely by inaction of Polish and Ukrainian governments. Back then, most protesters clearly declared they support Ukraine but are forced to fight for their jobs.
  2. The border blockade stopped in January 2024 after truckers signed an agreement with the Polish and government and promised to suspend the protest until March 2024 to allow implementation of all agreed controls.
  3. In February 2024 farmers’ protest restarted but was limited to traffic from Ukraine to EU, consistent with their economic demands regarding Ukrainian grain.
  4. In mid-February 2024 however the nature of the protest drastically changed, as it was joined by openly anti-Ukrainian banners presented by members of pro-Russian groups in Poland. These were openly xenophobic, calling to “kick Ukrainians out of Poland” etc.
  5. At the same time the blockade was also joined by the same truckers who earlier promised to suspend the protest until March. And truckers started blocking traffic… from EU into Ukraine.
  6. In perfect synchronisation media started mass campaign portraying the protests nearly as a Polish uprising against Ukraine.

At this stage there’s little doubt the whole campaign has been coordinated by Russia, who saw an divisive topic and decided to capitalize on it. What worries me is the passive posture of Polish government in this situation.

@kravietz @krimsonbun
the soviet flag is a bit too on the nose tho :)
Also, even the earlier protest were led by ppl from the pro-putin 'confederate' party, surely they have had this sort of thing in mind from the start. whether they had encouragement from the kremlin or came up w/ this themselves, the result is great value for at least solovyov and co.
And any legit concerns farmers/truckers may have had are now gonna get lumped with this shit, making them appear anti-eu/ua or pro-putin.
fun.

im not sure how comparable it really is, given the different character of the protests, but in both cases there probably are far-right/pro-kremlin provocateurs with inflammatory messaging trying to stir shit up.
ru historically inflame and amplify any social unrest in the west, so ditto here.
the thing with the protests on ua borders is they seem purpose designed to be helpful to vlad, kinda like the trucker shitshow in canada preceding the feb'22 invasion

I’ve worked several years in the automotive industry and saw how software was done there.

When the 737-MAX crashed, I entered into the rabbit-hole and built a really good understanding of the software issue.

The result are:

  • I don’t board a boeing plane anymore.
  • I avoid cars as much as I can.

In the last months of the 2,022nd year Earth Common Era, was led to the Mastodon herd by a werewolf from Melbourne, where they climbed up onto the thick matted wool of a beast affectionately known as AusSocial.
Dgar gripped onto the coat and screamed “Hello World!” No one except the werewolf heard.
Dgar began exploring, moving over the beast. So many interesting personalities, such diversity, and although no one seemed to notice them, Dgar noticed the inhabitants. They were being… nice to each other. Courteous and understanding of differing views and perspectives. Dgar was a bit weirded out, but continued to explore.

Explore.

Suddenly the view opened up and Dgar saw the herd for the first time. Beasts just like AusSocial, but all different in their own ways, stretching to the horizons, as far as the eye could see. And there weren’t just Mastodons either. There were all kinds of beasts, all carving out their own little niche. Someone behind whispered “That’s the Fediverse.” Dgar felt the presence of millions of people, working together, competing, evolving, developing… and despairing.

Dgar wandered from feed to feed, community to community, and slowly began to realise that almost everyone was talking about the same things.

Billionaires ruined some place that wasn’t anywhere near as good as where they are right now.
The depressing state of politics and the media that supports it.
Despair over misinformation and the people who believe it.
Gun control.
Climate change.
Natural disasters.
War. Murder. Disease.
Stop!

There’s no jokes.
There’s no shitposting.
There’s no laughter.
There’s lots of love and understanding, but when you look for something funny, there’s a few people asking “Where are all the jokes and shitposters?”

Dgar resolved to fill this niche, and began tooting every joke they could find. For several months, they tooted a joke or meme every twenty minutes while they were awake, and as often as possible while they were asleep. They would traverse great distances, well beyond the herd, to sift through what at times seemed like piles of refuse to find puns and funnies.
After some time, Dgar became known for the funny toots, and many people followed them.

Today, like most days, Dgar climbed up to take in the view of the herd, and a giant smile broke upon his face. There were jokes. There were memes. There were terrible puns. The toots emanating from the very top of AusSocial were light hearted and humorous takes.
It was beautiful.

And so Dgar finds themselves re-considering their place in the community. Does the Fediverse need Dgar to lift their spirit with stolen jokes, old puns, and scavenged memes?
Maybe.
But maybe not so much.

Perhaps the 2,024th year Earth Common Era will be the year Dgar begins concentrating on what Dgar loves.
Making music.

Thank you all for your support. Big love to each and every one of you. ♥️

It's unacceptable that we require jobs in order to "earn a living." Living is a right. For the same reason it's wrong to kill someone, it's also wrong to withhold food we all need to live when there's enough for all. Jobs should be about wages for fun stuff, not survival stuff.

maybenot,
@maybenot@mstdn.social avatar

@Itty53
also the second approach is prolly more vulnerable to being attacked as 'communism' esp. in the US

there's also the possibility it would end up being a combination of the two (more or less prioritizing corporate welfare)

or do you just mean we should wait with this until the oligarchy is somehow dealt with/defanged? because that could take a while, and damage control in the meantime is, i think, worthwhile?

3/3

maybenot,
@maybenot@mstdn.social avatar

@Itty53 do you think it likely that something like ubi would get a general roll-out sooner than at least single-payer healthcare?
because i'd think it would be harder to get it trough legislation than healthcare reforms (which afaik have decent support in society)
even just on the basis of being more "hurrdurr communism" and such
i agree, though, it would be bad if that happened
maybe part of the grifter class is actually angling for this, but it does't seem super likely to actually happen
