@Migueldeicaza AFAIK installing a keylogger in someones phone is illegal in all EU countries.
If your argument is "the EU does not want to allow apple to control which apps are available on their phones and thus they are responsible for scumbags spying on their couples", sorry but I don't buy it.
As you read about #Kushner advising that #Israel ethnically clean Palestinians out of their home to build a beach resort, remember that at his behest, on December 22, 2016, Mike Flynn "colluded" w/Russia to protect Bibi Netanyhu fr accountability for illegal West Bank settlements. 1/...
Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.
Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.
@pluralistic the sad thing with gmaps vs a community managed system like openstreetmaps is that gmaps is theoretically moderated, managed, "cleaned" by a dedicated, professional team. Sigh. A nearby street has had a typo on gmaps for years and they don't care.
@trantion@pluralistic Google Maps even allows bar owners to create a beach right in front of their bar (and within walking distance of the actual beach, already in maps with almost the same name).
Wonderful, isn't it? Snap your fingers and whoa, a new beach.
@nixCraft I got a call yesterday asking for help on a system I had deployed on a TV operator 11 years ago. It was a hardware glitch. Unfortunately they rebooted the operating system: 3588 days of uptime. The software in question had been restarted in 2015.

Hands up if you caused a global outage today...
Just me?
Sorry!
I was making a change to our "outside the UK" CDN config today for www.bbc.co.uk & www.bbc.com & the change included 2 bugs which pre-testing didn't spot:
The "Directorate C" of the FSB released some training shots. This one is interesting, as it shows a rather unusual DJI Inspire 2 Drone, usually used for actual cinema production.
This drone should be rather outdated, as its cameras do not offer significant zoom or other tactical payloads, so that choice is highly unusual, as a Mavic 3 can do more for far less weight, noise and cost.

March 2020 at Microsoft: everyone is going to be working from home! Facebook is pushing the metaverse! Zoom is eating market share from teams!
June 2020: as a result of the latest 57 meetings we have decided to add avatars to Teams
...
October, 2023: avatar feature released! Hello? Anyone?
Purely fictional story. Based on direct experience with multiple large corporations.
@noelreports fewer insightful comments than I used to read on the birdsite years ago, and a very very tiny fraction of the hate you can find there now. Overall, best social platform I've found so far.
@fkamiah17 now ask The Sun who is sponsoring that view.
If at some point govt says "trains are great but too expensive to pay with public money, so let's find a private investor who pays for that in exchange for running the line for a few decades...", then we'll have found him.
@mapologies Funny - I've heard galician speakers (NW Spain) call chickpeas "porotos".
There were massive migrations from there to South America in the XIX and XX that may have brought the word.
I met the engineers whose sea drones were blocked when Starlink didn't function in September 2022, because Musk feared "World War Three." But they tried the same attack again a month later, and they hit several targets in Sebastopol.
Some of us don't have any choice other than to keep posting on Twitter: in my case, I have several thousand defence-related contacts there. Until they all migrate over to mastodon and Bluesky, I'm caught in a bind.
Transcoding is no joke, for @pixelfed Stories, I decided to offload the transcoding process to your device so servers aren’t overwhelmed and the UX trade off in terms of users having to wait is ok
This doesn’t solve the quality issue, either we prioritize quality over disk space which benefits UX or prioritize disk space over quality which benefits instance admins.
I’m leaning towards prioritizing disk space for now, and am looking into HLS + delayed backend processing to solve this long term
@dansup@pixelfed I understand you are targeting mobile users mostly. How do you intend to offload transcoding to browser users?
More generally - most platforms transcode everything server side so that they can re-encode content again in newer profiles or codecs as needed, to validate uploads (everything is transcoded to common profiles) and to improve quality/space tradeoff (mobile encoders tend to be really poor).
But that means server bills, of course.
@Andy_Scollick when they say "believe in human caused climate change", it sounds like "believe in God" or "believe in people's goodwill ".
Political positions should differ in priority assignment, or in choosing the best policy to face a societal problem. Basing a political position on which facts one accepts or refuses is wrong and dangerous.
Can I stop believing in gravity so that I don't have to spend any effort in avoiding falling down?
