With the upcoming Fediverse service, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it.

โžก๏ธ To avoid data mining ...which Defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the fedi public social graph today - Want proof?
see: https://is.gd/q8U2pv

The next argument is about poorly moderated P92 user posts and ad spam.
Which I'll discuss next.

Others have said this. More and more, I think it's true: the Homeowners Association (HOA) culture on the Fediverse is hurting it.

Except, people who tend to push an HOA agenda don't even tend to be "homeowners". They don't code. They don't run servers. Many of them are recent arrivals to the Fediverse.

I don't bring that up to say that anyone's more or less important because they code or admin or have been active for awhile. But surely, if you're going to be a gatekeeper, you should have something to qualify you as the self-appointed enforcer of the HOA.

Usually, these self-appointed gatekeepers have never made any investment in this community. Instead, the HOA are outright hurting this community by being unwelcoming jackasses.

Just to give an example, why has #BlackTwitter soured on #Mastodon? It's the HOA in action. And who's currently uttering death threats to server admins? It's the HOA. They are toxic, and everywhere they go, they spread toxicity.

The worst FUD about the Fediverse isn't even coming from the likes of Big Social or Bluesky or the Press. It's from the HOA.

Who's spreading fears about "embrace, extend, extinguish"? It's the HOA. Who's creating uncertainty about whether ActivityPub can survive a corporation's use of it? Again, it's the HOA. And who believes that the Fediverse will die because something happened without their approval? It's the HOA every time.

The HOA has no authority here. The Fediverse has no board meetings, never mind a board of directors. Their decision making power is a complete delusion, a total fabrication of their collective imagination.

To be blunt, I'm done with entertaining the HOA's bluster, speciousness, and pretensions.

From here on out, at least on spaces I have tangible power, I'm gatekeeping the gatekeepers.

The HOA has no home here!

oceaniceternity,
@oceaniceternity@sakurajima.moe avatar

@atomicpoet

This seems reductionist to the extreme. First, you try and argue that members of a community are not stakeholders of that community, and then you try and say they have no power.

How is it wrong for members of a community to express their displeasure with decisions of an admin, their warranted dislike and scheptisism of #meta and exercise their ability to voice dissenting opinions? Users of mastodon don't all have an instance to gatekeep. However, they all have their goodwill to gatekeep. Everyone is free to do what they please: they are not free of the consequences. Any admin is free to federate with meta. They are not free from the criticism that they induce.

Is saying: past actions are indicative of future actions, these are the past actions of meta and indicative of what they could do in the future scaremongering? Or even unreasonable?

From here on out, gatekeep whoever you want. But remember, you will never be free from criticism.

An awful, awful mistake.

Agreed. Larger community spaces: discord servers, subreddits--are owned by corporations. It is terribly hard to get around that, especially given that google search results are never going to send you to a forum in this day and age.

But personal connections: for the people I like and make friends with, I almost always send them the necessary details to communicate with me via email--or even letters.

I'm wondering how the folks who were mortified to find out the protocol specs to be pretty wanting re when they found out the *key apps had long had 'full text search' are feeling now having all these folks joining the from , and being able to access the same social timeline. Oh and coming soon.

For all the talk about the being queer-built and a space for minorities, it's quickly been shown to not be that rugged wise at the mass adoption level beyond a social contract and the fediblock.

My is on private, thanks to the amount of bots and creepy guys that try to follow & message me. Can't wait until they can harass me on , or worse - here. And if the laugh-reaction pile-on cookers that harass the queer creators I follow on Facebook ever get here, let alone my Karen and Kevin relatives and school friends, who'll force me to lock down here when they're not longer "over there", then we're gonna need to reinvent the fediverse again. Web 1.0 third times a charm or something.

I'm beginning to see why being a niche unknown community mostly using the same software was considered safety by so many.

Why is search so broken just absolutely everywhere? It is 2023, and somehow search is considerably worse than in 2013 and arguably 2003. Iโ€™m not even talking like, google searches, but Iโ€™ll get to that in a sec. Iโ€™m talking the entire practice of making information findable

oceaniceternity,
@oceaniceternity@sakurajima.moe avatar

@emilygorcenski The problem with google, is SEO. Search engine optimisation is the art of filling a page of rubbish with as much keywords as possible: because that is how you get traffic. Unfortunately the articles have a tendancy to be:

  1. written in 15 min, SEO'd for three hours

  2. written by AI

  3. absolutely useless and not tell you more than talking to a rubber duck would.

To be perfectly honest, it's bad enough that I usually search reddit for questions I have, rather than google search, search forums... talk to people I know on discord.

But I guess google has cottoned on to that too with that perspectives tab thing.

Is there a name for the cognitive bias or even a trope where you feel like human infrastructureโ€”buildings, books, roads, microchips, plasticsโ€”are a sort of homogenous naturally-occurring goo that replenishes itself rather than being the product of human labor? A lot of urban fantasy & horror SF draws on this: libraries that go on forever, โ€œthe backroomsโ€, impractically vast digital networks in cyberpunk, epiphenomenal mystical roads in Kentucky Route Zeroโ€ฆ

oceaniceternity,

I wonder... if these depictions of homogeonous, nefarious, infrastructure is less something of note in and of itself, rather, if it is a reflection of this innate feeling that... we all have bullshit jobs live bullshit lives and are ultimately, living in a paradigm devoid of meaning?

Actively pushing against others to adopt your protocol is how you ensure that your protocol won't "win." I'm a firm believer that a decentralized protocol will be the future of social networks/feeds as we know them. I don't know if it is going to be or or something else. But I believe a decentralized protocol will be the future. But the winner will be the one that centralized-acting services adopt. That's a good thing for everyone. • Reaction emojis now appear bigger on our Mastodon on the Moe domain as I felt they are a bit too small. Now they are 32 pixels
  • Edit function is now enabled on our Calckey instance. Now you can edit your posts like you can on Mastodon. Also, there should be more accessibility functions added.
  • Urusai Social is now part of our relay, which should help those who are looking for people to discuss Anime with and they already follow a good amount of users here already. All our posts from our Mastodon and Calckey servers will appear there too.
  • Our Calckey server will be in Open Beta on May 19th.
