With the upcoming Fediverse service, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it.

➡️ To avoid data mining ...which Defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the fedi public social graph today - Want proof?

The next argument is about poorly moderated P92 user posts and ad spam.
Which I'll discuss next.

Whatever is going on right now in #Russia, I do note this: #Twitter is now useless at tracking this. Junk accounts everywhere, no verified accounts, swarms of sketchy bluechecks.

The ONE thing that place was good at was breaking global news. But not now.

See everyone here tonight.

and developers could learn a lot from each other: right now it feels like they could learn a lot from here on moderation…but seeing their new “anyone can create and use and share their own algorithm” - that’s great and Fedi should immediately learn from, implement and improve on that idea…

With news of the probable launch of Meta's #Project92 I wanted to make clear this servers policy:

"Don't preemptively strike meta w/ a fediblock, but stay vigilant with eyes wide open and a finger on the block button."

The same as we do for all servers.

They can be blocked instantly if they violate our terms of use, and as admins are in a far stronger position if we do so than vs before.

I hope all #fediadmins to consider taking this same policy. 1 of X 🧵

Lots of good discussion on and going on. These four questions dominate my thinking:

  1. Can the ATProtocol really scale and federate? This is a very open question.

  2. Can BlueSky's ATProtocol moderation work at scale? Or even NOT at scale? Blurry still.

  3. Can the and improve its UX and UI experiences faster than the these first two things occur?

Lastly:

  1. How quickly do robust Fediverse/ATProtocol bridges emerge?

To real concerns that Meta might do to Acivitypub as Google & they did to XMPP, this seems helpful including this point via
@darius

"Regardless of bigco shenanigans around open protocols, Kazemi isn’t worried about what happens with ActivityPub. 'The nice thing for me is that if the big companies do jump in [to support ActivityPub] and then sort of walk it back,' he remarked, 'at worst, we’ll be back to where we are right now, which is still a pretty nice place.'”

Watching #Elon and now #Reddit CEO Huffman run the same play, it makes me think that Matt Muellenweg may be the only tech CEO left that I can think of has any credibility on the #OpenWeb. #WordPress #Automattic

Hi @evan @cwebber@pfefferle
Timely question: Does anyone know the status of a formal or informal building out an test suite, akin to the one used to test http://webmention.rocks but for Acitivity pub.

I know the activitypub.rocks effort ended & I see this one that seemed to evolve from that but has been derelict for a while.

Is there any other effort active?

From the CEO of blogging site DailyKos, that sees about 160 million visits a year:

"Using Twitter is still a necessary evil for many of us, me included. But given the pace of alternatives suddenly emerging, those days are numbered. I fully expect Twitter to be obsolete by the end of the year, a $44-billion boondoggle that’ll resemble little more than a glorified Parler or Gab. Yet another ‘unscheduled rapid disassembly’ overseen by Elon Musk."

This seems very important and worth ongoing study:

“Once again, results suggest a rise in diversity as the 10 biggest server contribution to the Fediverse is reduced by more than 10%. So, even if the biggest servers are accumulating more users, it seems that the Fediverse is becoming more decentralized.”

Signs of the #RedditMigration in action: Three of the top 6 fastest growing #Fediverse servers are not only not Mastodon.social but they are not even microblogging servers - but rather are #Threadiverse servers.

That is only seriously good for the entire Fedi infrastructure. Diversity is strength.

Facinating to watch a potential to the fediverse. The and teams are dealing with all the same issues that Mastodon and other fedi microbloging sites did - but in even a faster timeframe as much of Reddit appears to be set to go dark on Monday. Questions of how to onboard, questions of centralized vs distributed onboarding, questions of how to explain servers and federation, and deep questions of how to scale if traffic is anyting like it could be Monday...

Quick bet: will grow dramatically over the next quarter.

And the will continue to grow at AT LEAST 800,000 to 1 million+ new users per month as well. No let up.

Dramatic new apps will launch supporting BlueSky AND cool new features launching in great apps for Mastodon.

A decentralized rising tide of awareness lifts all decentralized boats.

Meanwhile:
Twitter will lose Monthly Active users. So will mini-me closed source platforms (Spoutible, Tribal, etc)

tchambers, to fediverse

I'm not sure one side has to win, or lose, I think the long-term play is to interop, and to bridge both networks...

But this is a great snapshot of the changes coming to and its advantages as an inherently open system that can evolve fast.

It was pretty obvious that this would be so - but just noting that the Fediverse outlived the Metaverse.

Even with untold billions of dollars and multiple big tech entities pushing it, the Metaverse didn't live much past 3 years old.

At least in this incarnation.

and : In a few threads and forums there have been tons of chats about fixing the "remote follow" and related issues on the Mastodon/Fediverse WebUI experience.

Plugins are no fix. And what I'm about to share is not a "fix." But maybe a bandaid, while the protocol itself is worked out. What do you think?

It's only 55 lines of Javascript and on any page it asks you your home server ONCE, and then remembers and adapts all links from then on:

Thoughts?

@activitypubtestsuite - question for the group: even if we were not to use it’s codebase, is there value in getting the old ActivityPub.rocks test suite live again? Just to see the old test in action?

tchambers, to RedditMigration

This from @mmasnick gets it exactly right:

"Reddit is discovering the same thing that Twitter is also discovering: when you build a service where the value is all the free content that users provide, you’re going to run into some problems when you suddenly start acting like you 'own' all that, and you feel the need to put up paywalls for access.... at some point those users are going to realize they have the power to go elsewhere."

Hive Mind:

Doing a study on social engagement for non-Mastodon-content-focused accounts that cross-post almost the same content on both platforms.

(BTW the best practice for doing this to my mind is posting original content HERE and crossposting it THERE, but that's not the point of this exercise)

I want to compare social engagement for big and small accounts and work on a ratio to compare engagement apples to apples.

Does anyone do this, or recommend accounts I look at that do?
