I had a weird realization today:
You know how I make terrible keyboards? It turns out I can also made good keyboards!

Well, kinda. I had this silly gamer keyboard I kept around because it was small and I used it when I needed a random USB keyboard, but it was horrible to use. No contrast on the key labels...

but wait I have a bunch of keycaps since I'm a keyboard-making punk. what if I just put some onto it... and now it's readable! and looks snappy!

Blue team, if your daily operational time is spent more on satisfying internal objectives than addressing yourself to your adversary, you are doing exactly what they want.

I think we're focused on the wrong thing when we look at what tech works for a company like Amazon or Facebook or Netflix.

We should be looking at what tech works when you don't have a small army of staff engineers optimizing it. I want to know what I can scale without paying someone a half million dollar salary to do it.

There should be more case studies on things that don't have a billion-dollar company propping them up, humming along quietly on a cheap-ass VPS somewhere.

With AlmaLinux 9.4 we're bringing back support for some older hardware by re-enabling PCI IDs. Take a look at the list and let us know if they help, or if we're missing any for you! https://almalinux.discourse.group/t/re-adding-support-for-older-hardware/3851

A post just went by dealing with world geographical details and as I was hitting "page down" all I saw fly past was a colorful graph and then what I thought was the phrase:

"HOBBITABLE LAND."

And there is nothing remotely rational about this but my heart still flipped over really fast, this micro-second of hope that someone with means had the brilliant idea of turning some huge swath of land into burrow houses and and bare-footed farms with giant pumpkins, and here was their prospectus.

ALL CLEAR for Fedora Rawhide and Fedora 40 Beta builds regarding the xz exploit. 👍

Things had stabilized soon after the initial security advisory, but we're now confirming that you can use Rawhide and Fedora 40 Beta safely as long as you have the latest updates or reinstall (which is not a bad idea to be safe).

Fedora 38 and 39 were never affected.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to answer many of the things that the general public puts in front of social scientists and demands that we solve. Particularly when you work on social topics, people will ask you questions like: why is my boss mean, why doesn't government work, why am I sad.

When you build foundational theory it's too broad. When you do specific investigations it's too narrow. When you take some breather to talk technical shop you're accused of only talking to scientists and being unfeeling.

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

The anxious desire to have access to unquestionable authority makes even some of our allies -- who want to move the world towards real evidence and accurate knowledge of itself -- ignore the humanity of scientists in favor of a transactional relationship with us. This is one of the hardest lessons. Sometimes we get harangued for admitting an inch of doubt on society's most complicated social topics as if that makes us weak instead of careful. We need to center science as a process over findings.

Do any apps allow you to login to multiple accounts and view all of the timelines combined? ?

That is, merge , , etc. Homes into a single Home... Same for notifications, local feeds, global feeds etc? For extra credit, boost across multiple accounts.

If you're an app maintainer and haven't done this yet for your app, here are the docs: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/appdata-guidelines/quality-guidelines

To make it more interesting we're setting a deadline! We will be launching the new banners on April 20th, so for the possibility to be featured during the first week, update your apps today :)

    Off to Austin for @TexasLinuxFest!

I’ve got two (very different) talks:

The first ever conference talk on and one about container Linux (featuring and several other great distros).

After Austin I fly directly to Seattle for where I’ll be at the Valkey booth Tuesday to Thursday next week.

If you’re around at either event let’s connect!
