I'm Tonya Marie, a mid-50s trans woman originally from Texas but now safely ensconced in Seattle. I'm a semi-retired #math teacher and occasional coder, but my passion is being a housewife for my loving wife.

Mathematician John Conway was born #OTD in 1937. He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton. Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.
ETA: wow i forgot an image description on this one... and now I'm thinking of making this corny drawing I made to annoy my students into a 3D printed two-sided square keychain with these motifs in raised relief on each side... could be a nice graduation gif. They HATE this joke.
It was always interesting to me growing up in the days before LaTeX how, although #math and computer science were clearly joined at the hip— it was only my math homework that was impossible to type. And not just due to missing symbols— there were whole missing models of expression. This has changed in many ways— but the person who can type calculus notes in real time remains rare. Probably, handwriting recognition will fill this need before fast and natural #LaTeX typing becomes common.
I'm originally a physicist and studied gamma-ray bursts and their usefulness for cosmology. I used to carry a beeper to wake me up whenever our instrument detected a burst.
These days I do research in the advocacy world. At UCS I studied political interference in the work of federal scientists. I am currently the Research Manager for Greenpeace USA and focus a lot on climate and energy.
Well, I guess it's time for an #introduction. I'm moving over here from the birdsite; I'll miss (some of) it, but I already like the vibe here. I intend to fit in with the culture, so friendly pointers are welcome.
My posts are often jokes, but not everyone will get them. I like #puns, #math, #science, #computers, and thinking for myself -- you know, all the stuff that didn't make me friends in junior high school. :)
Reading a book on Category Theory is rewiring my brain. I was workshopping all day today and I saw surjections everywhere and started talking about the pullback of X.
I finished Seven Sketches and decided to work on my Abstract Algebra before going on to the book on Sheaves. #categorytheory
I started reading what is supposedly the standard book by Fraleigh but it is quite poor. Proofs are written obtusely and are difficult to parse and comprehend. And that’s for theorems I already know. No clue how I’m going to follow it for things I don’t know yet.
I guess the bar for #math books is just very low if this is considered to be good.
The Fraleigh Abstract #Algebra book is not going very well. I got the 7th international edition which is a gutted version of the book you're supposed to get and there is an updated 8th edition out now.
I procured the 8th edition which provides answers to the odd numbered exercises (sans proofs) and that's pretty useless if you're self-studying. It's supposed to have lectures, but those seem to be locked away by Pearson. Maybe I should switch to Gallian… #math
Hey, I'm blinry! I create digital tools and games, and digital art. I mostly use Mastodon to share my joy about things I learn or create. Welcome, everyone! :)
I love my communities: the Chaos community, Jugend Hackt, the Recurse Center.
