A sunny day today, and while I took the chance to mow, the local magpie family decided it was time for some sunbaking
I was initially worried someone had baited them! But they were happy as clams alternating jumping on insects the mower was scaring up, and flopping down like jellyfish, relaxing in the sunshine...
I've been playing with #GIMP recently, and here is one I am particularly proud of. This photo was a 6 second exposure of the moonrise over a river near #brisbane, and then I played with Simple Linear Interpretive Clustering Algorithms to cluster the image according to average pixel colour in segments of a given area using k-means clustering.
I was considering paying for one of those WIRED subscriptions they keep trying to sell to me with endless popups but then remembered that I can get every issue for free using my #Brisbane library card and the #Libby app. Libraries are amazing! 📚
Intro post! Hi all, my name is Janne, I'm an evolution and biodiversity researcher and first year PhD student in #brisbane#australia on split duties between the QLD Museum and Griffith University. I'm interested in the environmental drivers of biodiversity and niche evolution, and their interaction with climate.
Long shot but if anyone in #Brisbane needs a 550 watt ATX semi modular PC power supply — which has served me surprisingly well over the years for a cheapish unit — hit me up!
Noisy miners (Manorina melanocephala) - Kedron Brook, Brisbane, Australia - April 2024
This photo is notable because it's the first photo I've done using Linux for my entire end to end post processing. My workflow isn't close to as efficient as it was in Lightroom, but it feels good to be free of it!
Comb-crested Jacana navigating the waterlilies carrying chicks under his wings. There are 3 chicks in this brood, so either one is out independently, or has its legs pulled up out of sight
TIL it's the male that does this. Apologies to this guy, who I probably referred to as mum at the time
This bot monitors the Australian energy market price predictions published by AEMO. If it looks like price of electricity is about to go wonky @qldgridbot will toot about it.
I'm still fine-tuning the thresholds for what's considered an interesting event – right now that's a price peak of above 50c/kWh. I'm aiming for less than 5 toots a day.
Let me know what you think. Retoot for visibility please!
I just saw that London has a Craft Week and now I feel like Australia needs a Craft Week too. So many craft skills are disappearing. Sewing is enjoying a resurgence in recent years but crafts like tatting and lacemaking are dying out and traditional craft groups are finding it harder to attract younger people to pass their skills on to.
Australian Craft Week: Because when society collapses we need crafts to carve the paddle that will rescue us from shit creek.
