Fediverse

ty_406,

Just downloaded @ivory for Mac and it’s everything I was hoping for!

Great job to the whole @tapbots team! I love seeing apps with so much care and attention put into them.

Is the ballooning server storage requirements for Mastodon (e.g. for small single-user or family instances) a side-effect of being a good ActivityPub client itself, or just a Mastodon thing?

E.g. if I wanted a just-as-federated server but running, say, GoToSocial instead, would I need just as much disk space?

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@martijn Mastodon does as well, but I seem to be hitting a wall with how low I can make the storage usage. Like over 50 GB of media and over 5 GB database.

Why isn't there a app called "Tootsie"?

luka,

@acousticmirror or an instance domain toots.ie?

(i did started toot.si tho) ;)

GrahamDowns,

I love how every time I open Twitter, I find people with active accounts. The is taking off, yo!

GrahamDowns,

@wogan And when woganmay is auto-deleted, will you reclaim it? ;-P

Ja, I think you're right. But whatever happens to it, it will still be owned by one individual or organisation with the potential to turn megalomaniac. Just like BlueSky, which sure, is worth a look, but ultimately it suffers from the same problem. :/

wogan,

@GrahamDowns I might squat on it to preserve the name, but long-term, I'm done with Twitter. Very happy to move back to having my own website + "slow" social networking!

BlueSky is really funny actually - Dorsey and co went off to design a completely overengineered protocol instead of just adopting ActivityPub. Meanwhile, Instagram will allow some measure of ActivityPub integration in future, which is an interesting path for Meta to take!

Get a life, my friends tell me when they hear me talking about @Flipboard. I use it for everything from business, travel, cooking even organizing my house. Hello everyone! It is part of my life! In the last 12 years I have learned a ton of new things and met lovely people

mdmrn,

Okay, I like enough - but not enough to make this my primary Fediverse microblogging platform.

I've already established that with my account & while the features are neat (some of which are better than Masto), I like the little community I have there & these features are not enough to make me jump here permanently.

But, that's just my opinion. I'll probably drop random stuff here periodically, but if you like what little content I have here & aren't already - my main account is @mdmrn

There is one major reason I still use Mastodon, and won`t probably change anytime soon, being able to use Ivory, which is Mastodon's version of Tweetbot. Calckey still doesn't fully support it.

Yes, some features are cool in Calckey and it probably have a better web UI than Mastodon, which is workable, but not visually appearing as Mastodon instances just look the same. Not too many instances slap a custom style and change the fonts. The Calckey UI looks simular to Twitter, which is why some who just use the web UI normally might prefer it over Mastodon's web UI.

That said, the point of creating Calckey is to give users a choice and nudge people off the birdsite (and not go to Barcelona when it happens, not a big fan of Meta especially after some political stuff they did). If I manage to get a sizable number of users off Twitter and onto our Mastodon or Calckey server, it's a win.

At the end of the day, Mastodon will eventually gain quoting, better search, and groups, but it's always nice to see how other fediverse apps come along and the competition it will give to Mastodon.

mdmrn,
@mdmrn@urusai.social avatar

@chikorita157 @mdmrn Oh, it's absolutely nice to have options for everyone! And Calckey is a great option for a lot of folks. Calckey's Twitter-esque appearance definitely can serve as a great bridge to the Fediverse for new folks trying to check it out.

That said, I actually love Mastodon's very basic web UI. Especially the Enhanced Web Interface which reminds me of TweetDeck (which I loved). Whereas Calckey, despite all the adjustment options, I still can't find a UI that I genuinely like. But, again, that's me.

The more folks come to Fedi, the better. So, hoping Calckey provides them more options.

ivan18rod,

I'm curious about what instance actors are on servers. The reason I am asking is because I saw that instances have a instance.actor account.

kainoa,

@ivan18rod they're accounts that help your instance federate

A really interesting dive into the recent wave on

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2023/05/interview-with-a-crypto-scam-investment-spammer/

Really lays bare just how utterly unprepared mastodon was (and is) to deal with spam.

og,

Are the Apps mostly ?

SeaFury,

@og ice cube is free an pretty good. I use ivory because if it’s filtering capabilities.

og,

@SeaFury
I'll try this

miro,

Oh my holy server. There are so many cool Fediverse projects right know! I can't choose to which I want to commit. Mastodon is clearly getting too big and influential to stay there in the long term. However it's also the most stable and mature project. Oh, and yeah, sadly I can't pursue all of the interesting stuff. It's getting too complicated for me to manage... Let's see what happens in the next few months.

I feel very comfortable with the Fedi. Before I joined the , I was on Twitter and Facebook mostly, along with spending time on YouTube. But when things at Twitter are changing, I joined Fedi for the first time. It took me so long to learn the new things found only in the Fedi. When 2023 was opened, I opened up a new chapter, started finding a different instance that will suit my everyday posting, and @puniko 's instance was the first to join.

MKAB is a beautiful place to enjoy, there are a lot of emotes, including :nekosock: (actually a hallmark of @iro_miya). Fedi is a great place to support LGBT people. Being a Cis Ally, I supported a lot of LGBTQIA people. I didn't even know that the Flag of Cis Ally on pronouns.page is just a Trans flag with black chevron on it.

Thank you so very much puni and miya for having me here! I'm really glad to see new friends here! :recoloring:

@FeralRobots@mastodon.social avatar

There are something in the neighborhood of 9 million users on the , & people are still saying it's a flash in the pan?

My dear dudes, how many users do you need? There are around 7.5 million on Mastodon alone!

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@FeralRobots I am concerned about intangibles like "morale" and "vibe" and "momentum". I'm getting a growing sense that the balloon is leaking air, that people are going back to Twitter. I don't know how justified that is in objective numbers, but I suspect a lot of other people are getting that feeling too, and it can be its own thing, which is hard to combat. (I don't know how to combat it.)

FeralRobots,
@FeralRobots@mastodon.social avatar

@misc I hear you; that being said, things like 'bad morale/vibe' & 'decreasign momentum' tend to be self-fulfilling.

Again: whatever we say about it, it's still real as long as people keep doing it.

E.g. I started hearing people talk about decreasing Facebook numbers over a decade ago. They go up & down, but Facebook is so vast that people coming or going gets swamped by small improvements or degradations in how effectively Meta monetizes their crop (i.e., FB users). People still post on FB.

david_senate,

🚨 Is there an unspoken rule that you MUST cut ties with others once you hit a certain number of followers?

🤔 I'm just curious because it seems like some people with a higher follower count don't interact enough. And we don't want to become like , do we?

What can we do to keep authentic and engaging! 💪🤝

SpaceLifeForm,

@david_senate

It took me a while before I noticed the excessive boosters. I am sure that I ended up following quite a few even though at first they seemed worthy of following.

It got so bad that I have disabled seeing boosts as approximately 60% of my timeline was boosts, much of which I had already seen.

I miss posts every day because they probably average about 50 per hour that are not boosts.

It is difficult to go thru them at that rate.

I just give up and move on. If there is a post that would interest me, and I miss it, I figure someone else will bring it up later. Not much newsworthy slides by my radar.

TV news? Oldspaper?

I probably am already aware a day or two before.

david_senate,

@SpaceLifeForm I also have found a solution: using a specific filter in to cut all the boosts and replies from the people I follow. That way, I can see what they're actually posting and not get lost in the shuffle.
