I'm interested in exploring development of AT Protocol client apps, but have no access to BlueSky yet (running my own isolated server not really helpful here either).

If anyone does have a spare invite that be greatly appreciated!

Meta aka Instagram is working on a Twitter competitor that is rumored to be ActivityPub compatible.

If you run a fediverse instance (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Calckey and others), would you ban a Meta instance?

Boosts appreciated 👍

I do not run an instance, so I think the pool is not for me. However, I'll say that I definitely would quit an instance which didn't block Meta for harvesting my data

I do think it's a victory because in the end, the fediverse will always have the means to not federate with but the fact such big player adopt the protocol is going to bring a furry of other actors to potentially adopt the protocol, it's like "email" being adopted, yes some emails providers are bad but the internet won by having a common protocol for one to one interaction. The same can happen for !

I bring impressions and takes from 12 hours occasionally glancing at social and reading about the tech

The concept and approach to personal data / profile portability and security is neat. I’ll be interested to see how that progresses in practice over the next months and year, and how much cross pollination there ends up being between / and /

And then, unfortunately, at the moment there’s an.. oddly designed feature that enables some people to be total sleezeballs and rack up thousands / 10s of thousands of follows (yes! I saw an account with >40k follows!), in what I can only guess is a vain attempt at creating an influence-y social fiefdom early in the vacuum with few heavy hitters. I find it really distasteful and don’t plan on touching bsky until there’s a mitigation.

Call me a romantic, but I like to feel like I’m in a small community and sorta get to “know” the people following me? And have others discover me organically?

Anyway, I’ll be here :)

If and the fail to fulfill their promises, I predict there will be another. And another after that one. All funded and pushed by rich bastards with lots of connections. And we little people who have pushed the for years will all be expected to give them our attention and not be critical. All while this confusion slows adoption of by journalists and governments and developers and the decentralization moment passes yet again.

Calckey just had an update!

There's lots of bug fixes, but there's a few neat features that have been added such as:

  • New content warning design
  • Add continuation for thread reply level
  • Localization in Polish, Russian, Greek, Spanish, Japanese

Thrilling stuff!

Which bug fix/feature are you most excited about?

YouTube integration with ActivityPub would really enhance my experience. Mostly because the UX currently sucks.

I'd like to follow an address at youtube.com that posted for each video a subscribed channel published.

I think a dedicated address that published the community posts from my subscriptions would be very useful. Heck, just having a few RSS feeds could help.

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

Natureshadow, (edited )

@glitzersachen @birne @feditips @Gargron The arguments supporting my views were the start of the thread. My post is a conclusion of these arguments.

On top of that, deliberately breaks specs, and refuses to fix that. It can already be observed that, instead of forcing Mastodon to be interoperable, other projects start breaking their implementations to please Mastodon instead due to its market power.

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@feditips And this should all not be the case.

Granted, as a / - will outlive anyway, just as & outlived & .

At most Mastodon will die out like , & nowadays and ["Server"] in the future...

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@feditips Hence, we should and constantly inform everyone that there is a world out there.

But how can we make people explore the fediverse when:

  1. People falsely assume that is the / . That's like saying is .

  2. When something is lacking in Mastodon, people assume it is the Fediverse / ActivityPub that is lacking. That is like saying chicken is the worst food because you've tasted McDonald's chicken, when there 's is tastier and juicier.

There are now even people who praise a non-fediverse network based on those false assumptions above. They have time to research a non-fediverse network, but doesn't have the time to do their due diligence about the Fediverse; all because they falsely assumed they've seen everything.

It's like moving to a new country, settling in a new home, exploring their new neighbourhood, and then assumed that village they're in is a representation of the entire country.

If we can make people see, and make people explore their own “city” and “country”, then maybe, just maybe, the distribution of people in the fediverse will start to balance between the different forks, projects, and instances. It won't happen overnight, but maybe we can plant the seeds.

All these talk about and complaints about this, that, this, and that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from .

()? Check out and (the latter is in the ). / ? There is , , Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a -like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or . What else?

The problem stems from the fediverse ending up unofficially represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.

What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.

No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.

Also, no one is saying shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.

Here's a : Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.

Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?

I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.

I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!

There's now an alpha version for testing deployed at https://alpha.fedimovies.rocks

How it works? Look at any movie listed on https://www.themoviedb.org/ and copy the title plus the year and format like so:

@{TileOfTheMoviePascalCase}_{YEAR}@alpha.fedimovies.rocks

The profile of the movie will re-toot your review for its followers. You can also look up and follow movie profiles following the same schema above.
