I am looking for a solution to scan ISBN (with my smartphone) and automatically search them in our catalogue. I need it for a very specific purpose: going through large amounts of books at fairs in a quick fashion. Only need to check availability.
I found an older Code4Lib article (see above) but I have no idea of coding and great optimism that there should be easier/newer solutions?
Help build or support a shadow library that isn't on some white libertarian nonsense
Then people don't have to use the above two
Destroy the multinational corporate behemoths behind the lawsuit
(Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, and Penguin Random House)
Overthrow the illegitimate government which issued the ruling
Fascist police states built on slavery & genocide are bad, actually
Don't allow anyone to gaslight you. The American Library Association (where I work, by the way) documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the HIGHEST NUMBER of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago.
I could probably think of more but I think that's a good start! I also have a blog that you can check out here: https://bookishnoelle.linefeed.app. I write about technology, the books I'm reading, and I'm planning on writing updates on my journey of learning how to code a blog in #html and #css. Follow me if any of what I just wrote sounds interesting to you! Thank you for reading. 😄
Anyone know Black #librarians looking for work? Asking for my partner, who would love to not be the last one standing at one of the main #libraries serving Black #Boston. #BlackMastodon#LibraryJobs#Jobs
Update: the position has been filled. Thank you for all your boosts.
A look inside an early modern book shop: a thread for #histodons and #bookhistory experts.
Expect surprises, nowadays book buyers. I am using printed images of the chapter dedicated to bookseller's shops of the "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (Visible World in Pictures) from John Amos #Comenius. The book was firstly published in 1658 and became a widely reprinted and variated children's textbook for centuries.
Let's start with the obvious: this book shop is well organized, and does not invite to browse the offered titles. Why?
Because #backwardsbooks! You might remember that books in #libraries and #bookshops were shelved fore-edge outwards way into the eighteenth century. It was a bookish world in which authors and titles were often written in ink onto the fore-edges.
So as a buyer in 1658 you might choose to look at boxes or fore-edges, or talk to the bookseller at the desk.
"Implementing the #NelsonMemo via an #APC model is antithetical to the equity goals so clearly articulated in the guidance memo and the values of our institutions."
Another excerpt: "As representatives of some of the most well-resourced #libraries in the country, we are committed to using our resources to promote public access to all research, not just the research our scholars produce. If public access to research outputs is achieved via a pay-to-publish model, we will have squandered an opportunity to promote #equity in scholarly communication."
Not sure who needs to hear this today, but remember, your local public library benefits from being used! Usage statistics are how librarians argue for funding! By using this shared service more, you are making it BETTER for everyone else!
It's the glory of the commons, not the tragedy of the commons. Go to the library!!!
heya, i’m coffeentacos. pronouns are he/him, i’m in my 30s, and am in the midst of a career change to libraries!
grew up as a sega kid and have recently decided i wanted to have easier access to that part of my youth and experience games i hadn’t gotten at the time. i’ve been diving into the sega saturn's library recently and it’s been a good time.
Hi, folks! This is the Library for Southern Connecticut State University, a mid-sized public university in New Haven, CT, serving the academic & research needs of the Southern community.
Posting about campus-specific events & resources will be Unlisted or Followers-Only. We will also share info about SCSU, libraries, scholarly resources, open access, higher ed, and owls. :scsu_owls:
Allows you to create a list of #libraries where you have a card (borrowing privileges), and then displays ebook / audiobook availability when you visit certain book pages.
It's very cool and has saved me alot of money (borrowing vs buying).
If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.
Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.
Like I said, this will determine the future of not only the #InternetArchive where a bad ruling effectively kills a vital service but the existence of #libraries as we know it today.
Long story short, not only this affects the future of the #InternetArchive and #libraries altogether but also (as mentioned) fact checking and truthful information as well.
Today is the day oral arguments officially start in the Big Publishing/Copyright Cartel's lawsuit against the @internetarchive which would effectively kill the great service and perhaps #libraries altogether if it goes their way.
Very gutted to hear this decision on a Friday Night Dump no less. I already said this will be appealed no matter what happens but it's not looking good for the future of the @internetarchive and most likely #libraries as we know them and I hope the Second Circuit understands what's at stake. https://www.docdroid.net/qM0MbI7/ia-sjm-order-pdf
Basically Publishers and the Copyright Cartel are basically one win away from not only killing the @internetarchive but also #libraries as we know them. I and many others hope that the Second Circuit gets it right to keep this alive.
