A year can go by in a flash. And that’s certainly how I feel as @Flipboard marks the first birthday of our Mastodon editorial desks. We tentatively dipped our toes into the water, not sure what to expect. What we quickly discovered was a smart, engaged community of people truly curious about our world for all its virtues and faults.
We instantly observed far more replies, favorites and boosts than we ever saw on X (Twitter) even though we had many more followers there. By November, we abandoned X to focus on Mastodon and a few other platforms.
When we launched our Mastodon accounts, we had no idea that Flipboard itself would federate, which is a work in progress. In recent months, we’ve federated our editorial curation from the app, greatly expanding your options to follow the topics you’re most interested in, such as news, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. And we’re in the process of federating publisher Flipboard accounts so that you can follow their topical Magazines. Already, you can find accounts such as Smithsonian Magazine, Euronews, Frommers, CBS Sports and SPIN.
Thank you for all of your feedback and support. If you like our work, please boost this post and help us grow our audience.
I'm having problems migrating from qoto.org to @hesgen, owing to a fault that prevents migration of followers to a new instance.
If you follow me here, and haven't already done so, please follow @hesgen manually. At the time of writing, around 70 of you have done this, for which many thanks.
If you don't follow me here, g'wan, you know you want to! Not here, but at @hesgen.
I'm getting the impression that, on a technical level, Mastodon is all a bit sealing wax and string.
Update: 17 March...
Still not resolved. Sysadmin says he'll look at the problem in the coming week. Around 10% of followers have manually re-followed at @hesgen.
Update: 22 March...
I still cannot migrate the account. So, it's possibly time to abandon this platform, if not social media as a whole, and continue to use twitter as no more than a bot for posting links to stuff published on substack and elsewhere. Life's too short for all this faffing about.
Update: 27 March...
I still cannot move my account from qoto.org, so I guess that's it. Be warned that my Mastodon presence may disappear soon, and without warning.
As well as federating publisher Magazines from the U.K., we have federated our own human-curated Magazines. To see everything from the profile, follow @FlipboardUK. Here are Magazines to follow if you're only interested in specific topics:
Wir haben nicht nur die ersten Magazine von Publishern aus Deutschland föderiert, sondern auch unseren eigenen redaktionellen Account gelauncht, den wir manuell kuratieren. Wir haben außerdem unsere eigenen Magazine föderiert. Folge einfach @FlipboardDE, um alles aus dem Profil zu sehen.
Hier sind Magazine zum Folgen, wenn Dich nur bestimmte Themen interessieren:

How many more of these stories are needed to make people realize they need to leave X and make it irrelevant?
[…] While X does have a policy around sharing private information, the company’s terms of service on March 20 did not mention a policy related to outing the identity of an anonymous user, and Benarroch did not respond to a request for clarification. On March 21, after WIRED published this story, X updated its privacy policy to specifically prohibit posting the ”the identity of an anonymous user, such as their name or media depicting them.”
Today, we're beginning to federate a selection of publishers based in Germany and the U.K. We've also introduced @FlipboardDE, a new profile for the Mastodon community in Germany. In the first test, we are partnering with 21 publishers to federate their profiles and Magazines. Follow the profile to see all the stories they are posting on Flipboard, or topically curated Magazines to get coverage on specific areas of interest. Here's a blogpost that explains more.
Here are all the accounts you can follow for federated publishers in the United Kingdom. To find their Magazines, simply search for the publisher profile and you should see a list of everything they're curating.

My attempt to migrate here from @hesgen is not going to plan. Moving followers and redirecting from qoto.org is either broken or not implemented in its 'fork' of Mastodon.
Mastodon.online becoming enshittifed, no longer able to select the dark or the light theme--instead, what it does if you select one is give you the High Contrast theme.
Anyone know a good general purpose Mastodon server?
I don't think I fit in well on any of these more niche instances, and I'm way too opinionated politically, and I swear frequently, so the tone policing servers are right out.
@inquiline Many lessons to draw form this, thanks. I somehow missed the hot ass controversy (what a mess!), which sounds fairly fitting re:
> “Lossy distribution” aka ... the phenomenon of how posts get seeded in a manner that suggests they are viewable to a wide, undifferentiated audience; but in practice results in, well, loss. And not only loss, but unknowable, invisible loss.
It might be true for all things social web. Yet more so for the Fediverse?
This is really encouraging. Hopefully their internal discussions filter out into the wider BBC community and convince more journalists to logon to Mastodon.
That said, the R&D's recognition that they could publish directly into the Fediverse using ActivityPub is even more encouraging and important because it opens up a huge array of options for their content.
"lifergeek.social" purchased and DNS is mostly set up. Next up is to clone hambon.es's VM and clean it up to be a fresh install. I'll keep both running for the immediate future, but I'll urge anyone on my current instance to migrate to the new one or elsewhere. #mastadon#hambones#mastodonmigration
