A year can go by in a flash. And that’s certainly how I feel as @Flipboard marks the first birthday of our Mastodon editorial desks. We tentatively dipped our toes into the water, not sure what to expect. What we quickly discovered was a smart, engaged community of people truly curious about our world for all its virtues and faults.

We instantly observed far more replies, favorites and boosts than we ever saw on X (Twitter) even though we had many more followers there. By November, we abandoned X to focus on Mastodon and a few other platforms.

When we launched our Mastodon accounts, we had no idea that Flipboard itself would federate, which is a work in progress. In recent months, we’ve federated our editorial curation from the app, greatly expanding your options to follow the topics you’re most interested in, such as news, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. And we’re in the process of federating publisher Flipboard accounts so that you can follow their topical Magazines. Already, you can find accounts such as Smithsonian Magazine, Euronews, Frommers, CBS Sports and SPIN.

Thank you for all of your feedback and support. If you like our work, please boost this post and help us grow our audience.

For over a decade, @Flipboard's in-house editorial team has been curating the world’s best journalism around the clock. But to access this curation, you had to use the Flipboard app or visit flipboard.com.

Now we’ve decided to federate our Flipboard editorial profiles and their related Magazines in order to make our collections available to everyone on Mastodon and other Fediverse networks.

Here's what we're up to. Would love your feedback!

https://about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/how-flipboard-is-using-our-new-federated-magazines/

csullivan,
@csullivan@flipboard.social avatar

@Flipboard @jack @thesportsdesk Thanks for the feedback. Another way to find a federated Magazine is to copy the Magazine URL from flipboard.com into the Mastodon search bar. That should bring up the account. Example: This URL (https://flipboard.com/@electioncentral/trump-legal-issues-8b7bnctqy) brings up @trump.
And yes, we're hoping this will get easier over time.

If you worked in the media industry for the last three decades, the fear of layoffs was a constant. Yesterday's spectacular implosion of The Messenger is just the latest example.

Flipboard's @NewsDesk curated these stories on the crisis: https://flip.it/td6dNw

Frankly, it's all rather depressing. With fewer reporters and media outlets, more governments and companies are operating in the dark. Who knows what important stories are left untold? What terrible wrongdoings uncovered? Our public is less informed, which threatens our democracy.

I don't have a solution but it seems clear we need to rethink our entire model of an independent press and the role it plays in society.

Two New Yorkers are suing Madonna because her December concert started late. While the tickets said the show would begin at 8:30 p.m., Madonna didn't arrive on stage until after 10:45 p.m., the lawsuit says, leaving the concertgoers facing limited and pricy transportation home by the time the show let out at 1 a.m. Here are the details from ABC. What do you think?

csullivan,
@csullivan@flipboard.social avatar

@CultureDesk There's late, and then there's laaaaaate. I expect most concerts to not start on time, but over 2 hours is pushing it.

@TheConversationUS presents the magnificent history of the maligned and misunderstood fruitcake.

@CultureDesk @TheConversationUS Depends on the type of fruitcake and who baked it!

Remember the first rap song you heard? As the genre turns 50, the Associated Press asked some of your favorite rappers and DJs about the first ones they can recall and how the music influenced their lives. Their responses are like taking a trip down hip-hop memory lane. We want to know which rap song was the first one you heard: https://flip.it/xqs0qk

@CultureDesk I also remember "Jam On It" by Newcleus and of course Blondie's "Rapture."

NewsDesk, to Titanic
@NewsDesk@flipboard.social avatar

Commentators have noted that the thousands of migrants who perish on the ocean each year don't get nearly the amount of media coverage as the Titanic submarine.

CNN analysis: "News outlets go all in on missing Titanic submersible. But have they gone overboard in coverage?"

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/06/21/media/titanic-submersible-reliable-sources/index.html

csullivan,
@csullivan@flipboard.social avatar

@NewsDesk It's a fair question. But the media is always a sucker for a dramatic, unusual story. And the Titanic angle makes it juicier.

For Pride Month, I curated the @Flipboard travel newsletter.

Travel has always been an integral part of life for many LGBTQ people, starting with the coming out journey, which often involves exploration and resettlement in cities and welcoming communities. And many queer people never lose that wandering, curious desire to experience different cultures and meet kindred spirits.

A view of air pollution in Sunnyside, Queens, at 7 pm on June 6. Normally, most of this image would be blue skies and clear views of the skyscrapers of Long Island City and Manhattan.

It sadly reminds me of many bad air days when I lived in New Delhi for a few years. And it sadly is likely to become a more frequent occurrence, thanks to climate change: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/06/07/see-wildfire-smoke-map-of-us-canada/70293572007/

@janettespeyer Indeed, we are living in strange times, where real journalism is denigrated, science is dismissed and conspiracy theories flourish.

CNN's Trump town hall wasn't journalism. It was entertainment, maybe? (If you find that sort of thing entertaining.)

It's a sad omen of what Axios called the 2024 "trust-nothing election," where voters continue to believe only the info that fits their world view, and where AI is about to unleash a mighty new stream of misinformation.
