Doctors rail against NC's proposed masking ban aimed at protesters
“Politicizing what is fundamentally a health issue for a cheap shot at the Israel-Gaza debate is unconscionable.” -
Cameron Wolfe, Duke infectious disease specialist
“We talk a lot about freedoms in this chamber. ... [People] should have the freedom to wear a mask ... to protect [their lives] ... without fear of being arrested.” - Sen. Sydney Batch, cancer survivor
North Carolina bill to curb mask-wearing in protests could make it illegal for medical reasons, too
People wearing a mask during protests could face extra penalties if arrested, under proposed legislation critics say could make it illegal to wear a mask in public to protect against COVID-19 or for other health reasons.
“The world is different now. We can’t go back to when pandemics didn’t happen.” - Sen. Natasha Marcus (D)
Welcome to the #ncpol collab you didn't know you needed!
In honor of #NationalFarmworkerAwarenessWeek,
Braxton Winston & I are teaming up. We're talking about how farmworkers keep food on our tables, the dangers they face on the job, and how simple it is to keep farm workers safe.
“We have white prosecutors standing in front of overwhelmingly white juries comparing Black defendants facing the death penalty to animals – ‘mad dogs,’ ‘hyenas,’ ‘predators of the African plain,’” said Henderson Hill, senior counsel for the ACLU. “The racism in North Carolina’s application of the death penalty is so clear it’s blinding.”
Under existing gerrymanders in North Carolina, the GOP seized supermajorities in both houses of the General Assembly with 50.7% of the vote. Under the new maps, they will retain those supermajorities until the Democrats achieve 52% of the vote, at which point the GOP retains the supermajority in the Senate, but their grip on the House slips to a strong majority.

Senate Bill 90 dropped a whole bunch of changes last night. Most of it incredibly terrible for lgbtq children. Also portions of it read pretty bad for any child in an abusive house. I havent seen a single article summarizing the sheer number of terrible things in the bill yet.
Some of it is repetition from other states some of it is all new.
The clause that parents get auto-notified and get to block a student from joining any school club. Assuming LGBTQ student alliances are the targets there.
Sounds also like a new council will be setup to oversee all educational standards in the state, and theyve set it up that mostly current GOP controlled positions in the state will nominate most of it's members.
This bill, chiefly designed to deny rights and endanger trans students, reached the governor's desk on June 29.
Now Governor Cooper, a Democrat, is likely to veto it, but if he doesn't do so in time, the bill becomes law anyway.
If (hopefully when) he vetoes the bill, the General Assembly will reconvene, as required by law and under the Governor's direction, to discuss whether to override the veto. This will be harder than passing it in the first place, so there's still some hope.
North carolina just passed a gender affirming healthcare ban on minors yesterday...
Our governor and the legislator will spend about a week or two vetoing it, and then overturning the veto.
Sometime in the next couple of days the supreme court is going to rule on "303 Creative v. Elenis". Which I expect will legalize religious discrimination against lgbtq people, by denying them services.
But "WooHoo!" Fourth of July weekend.
Fucking god forsaken hellscape of a place to be in.
